Since June 1990, U.S. Armed Forces have been involve in more than a half dozen monumental assistance effort They range from the evacuation of non-combatants to feedir the starving people of Somalia in Operation Restore Hop1 In several of the humanitarian missions the Landing Craf Air Cushion (LCAC) played a pivotal role. An example 1 Operation Sea Angel during which LCACs delivered foo< shelter and medical supplies to nearly two million peop! devastated by a cyclone that struck Bangladesh.
Of particular note is the fact that earlier assistance oper tions occurred while the U.S. was engaged in the Persia Gulf War. We know of no other nation in the world that cou1 cover the globe with humanitarian efforts and simultaneous fight against tyranny.
At Textron Marine Systems, we’re proud that our multi-u^ LCACs have contributed to these efforts.
To amphibious forces, the LCAC is a key ele
ment for conducting maneuver warfare from the sea to coastal positions. Traveling at 40 knots on a cushion of air from over the horizon, LCACs provide the capability to swiftly deliver tanks and other heavy equipment for an entire Marine assault unit on a beachhead.
Whether the landing area is improved or not, the Navy/Marine Corps team can attest that the LCAC, configured as a military vehicle, is an efficient and reliable means for projecting power ashore.

What makes the S211A the most suitable primary trainer aircraft? It’s a jet for one. And it’s the smallest, most agile, least expensive of any proposed JPATS jet. But that’s only one part of our Total Training System. We prepare students through a program of academics and computer- based instruction, simulator and procedures training, and of course,
S211A flight training. Each is designed to teach critical piloting skills.
WE TAKE STUDENTS THROUGH COMPUTERS
SIMULATORS, CLASSROOMS,
AND CLOUDS.
We’ve spent the last six years preparing for a mutually supportive, interactive and completely integrated Total Training System. The simple fact is, a well integrated training program will be key to a successful JPATS solution. And no one has more experience integrating systems than we do. NORTHROP GRUMMAN

The Men of the USS Mason
By Mary Pat Kelly
At a time when most black American sailors were relegated to service as cooks and waiters, the African-American crew of the USS Mason made history by performing all the duties of seamanship needed to take a warship into combat. Told from the crew’s point of view, this collective memoir recalls incidents of prejudice but mostly the focus is on the mens’ highly successful shipboard experiences.
In October 1944 during a fierce storm in the North Atlantic, the Mason shepherded some 20 vessels to safety, despite serious damage to their own ship and then braved 40- foot waves to weld together open seams in the deck. These actions earned the respect of many and a recommendation that a Letter of Commendation be included in each man’s file—a recommendation that was not acted upon.
Compiled by best-selling author and filmmaker Mary Pat Kelly from extensive interviews and new research in Navy records, this collective memoir contributes significantly to the social history of the United States as well as to the history of the U.S. Navy. A documentary on the men of the Mason will air nationwide on public television and work on a feature film will begin soon. 224pages. 50photos. Apps. Index. #1-4539/$29.95

GR&F SPEE’S
By Keith Yates
In November 1914 Admiral Spee and his gallant men of the Kaiserliche Marine challenged Great Britain’s long-held supremacy at sea when his cruisers inflicted the only defeat the Royal Navy had known in over 100 years. This lively overview of the ensuing struggle includes the devastation of the Konigsberg, which convinced the Germans to concentrate on their more deadly U-boats. 288 pages. 26 photos. 15maps. Apps. Only one is tailor-made for JPATS.
If our nation is to continue having the best pilots in the world, we must give them the best training in the world. From day one. And it all starts with the new JPATS trainer.
The JPATS Citationjet is the one and only candidate that's literally made for the JPATS mission. It isn't a reworked turboprop design, or a made-over foreign trainer. It's a modem primary trainer that's custom-designed to meet not only every required JPATS performance level, but virtually all of the desired levels, as well.
And it will comfortably accommodate every male and female pilot within the desired size range.
Only one is a twin-engine jet
The twin-turbofan JPATS Citationjet will teach skills that young pilots simply can't acquire in any single-engine trainer. It will allow engine-out demonstrations to remain an important part of primary training. And it will provide a far greater measure of safety.
Only one is so simple to maintain.
The JPATS Citationjet was designed for maximum accessibility, low operating cost, and requires exceptionally low maintenance per flight hour.
Only one is built by the experts.
Cessna is the world's leading manufacturer of JPATS-size turbofan aircraft. We're the only candidate with so much experience, so much existing technology, and so many production lines already up and running.
The JPATS Citationjet.
Only one is 100 percent American.
1
1
I t
r our nation.
The JPATS Citationjet is the only all-American candidate. The entire program will be handled by a single American company, with no foreign partners. So nothing will get lost in translation.
And no time or money will be wasted in coordinating offshore committees.
Only one protects America's future.
The United States has been the world leader in aviation since first flight by the Wright brothers. Aviation is clearly one of the most important core competencies that is key to our nation retaining its world economic power.
But if the U.S. purchases a foreign aircraft for JPATS, we will be vacating the world primary trainer market forever, and handing it to a foreign government. And we will risk giving away our country's core competency in light jet aircraft. In short, if a foreign aircraft is the JPATS winner, our entire nation will be the loser.
Only one can save more American dollars.
The sale of JPATS trainers to other nations can reduce the costs to the U.S. And no candidate can save our nation more than the JPATS Citationjet. Because Cessna has no foreign partners, all benefits from foreign sales would remain in this country - creating thousands of jobs and allowing us to pass the greatest savings on to the U.S.
The JPATS Citationjet It's the right aircraft It's the right manufacturer.
And it's the right choice for our entire nation.
