This html article is produced from an uncorrected text file through optical character recognition. Prior to 1940 articles all text has been corrected, but from 1940 to the present most still remain uncorrected. Artifacts of the scans are misspellings, out-of-context footnotes and sidebars, and other inconsistencies. Adjacent to each text file is a PDF of the article, which accurately and fully conveys the content as it appeared in the issue. The uncorrected text files have been included to enhance the searchability of our content, on our site and in search engines, for our membership, the research community and media organizations. We are working now to provide clean text files for the entire collection.

NUCLEAR-POWERED SHIP AND SUBMARINE RECYCLING PROGRAM:
In this program, nuclear-powered submarines (SSNs/SSBNs) and cruisers (CGNs) on the East and West Coast, are decommissioned at or towed to the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, WA. At the shipyard—the only one that participates in this program—the decommissioned submarine or cruiser has her reactor compartment cut out of the hull; the compartment is then disposed of by other means. All useable equipment and all contaminates, such as PCPs, are removed from the hull. After that is completed, the gutted hull is cut up. The HY-80 scrap steel is then sold to commercial purchasers.

Cookery Class
The Commandant General, who valued precision, put random snap questions in the course of his inspection of Headquarters Company of 42 Commando.
“What do you do?” he asked a Marine.
“Chef, Sir.”
“Have you passed your City and Guilds examination?”
“No, Sir.”
“Then you’re not a Chef. You’re a Cook.”
Further along the line he asked another Marine what he did.
“Cook, Sir.”
“How long have you been a cook?”
“About 40 seconds, Sir.”
