This html article is produced from an uncorrected text file through optical character recognition. Prior to 1940 articles all text has been corrected, but from 1940 to the present most still remain uncorrected. Artifacts of the scans are misspellings, out-of-context footnotes and sidebars, and other inconsistencies. Adjacent to each text file is a PDF of the article, which accurately and fully conveys the content as it appeared in the issue. The uncorrected text files have been included to enhance the searchability of our content, on our site and in search engines, for our membership, the research community and media organizations. We are working now to provide clean text files for the entire collection.

Lest We Forget. . .
The name “Juneau” carries more than 50 years of continuing service for the U.S. Navy. The first Juneau (CL-52) was built by the Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company of Kearny, New Jersey, and was commissioned on 14 February 1942, two months after the United States entered World War II. The Juneau had an overall length of 541 feet, a beam of 53 feet, and a displacement of 6,000 tons. She had 16 5- inch guns, four quadruple 1-inch gun mounts, and eight 21-inch surface torpedo tubes. The Juneau was manned by 26 officers and 597 enlisted men, and had a top speed of 32 knots. In September 1942, the Juneau sailed with the USS Wasp (CV-7) carrier force—teamed with the USS Hornet (CV-8) carrier force—for reinforcement of Guadalcanal, and two months later, on 13 November 1942, she was hit by two torpedoes from the Japanese submarine 1-26. Only ten of her men on board survived the blast, and among the 700 casualties were her com
manding officer, Captain Lyman K. Swenson, and the five Sullivan brothers. Although her naval career lasted less than a year, the Juneau earned five battle stars for her participation in the Solomons Islands Buin-Faisi-Tonolai Raid, the Battle of Santa Cruz Islands, and the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal.
The second Juneau (CLAA-119) was also built by the Federal Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company. She was originally classified as a light cruiser and commissioned on 15 February 1946. She shared the size and displacement of the first, but the armament of CLAA-119 consisted of 12 5-inch guns, four quadruple 40-millimeter mounts, and six twin 40-millimeter mounts. In March 1949, the Juneau was designated an antiaircraft light cruiser, and in December of that year she was transferred to the Pacific. Two days after the Korean War broke out on 25 June 1950, the Juneau was patrolling the coastal waters of Korea. During her two Korean tours, from June 1950 to November 1952, the Juneau landed the first Americans in Korea, conducted the first shore bombardment, and sent ashore the first raiding party. On 23 March 1956, the Juneau was placed in commission in reserve and remained inactive until she was decommissioned in July of that year.
The third Juneau (LPD-10) was built by Lockheed Ship Building, Seattle, Washington, and was commissioned on 7 December 1969. The Austin-class amphibious transport, dock, is currently assigned to the Pacific Fleet. In April 1989, the Juneau departed for Alaska to help clean the massive oil spill in the Alaskan waters of Prince William Sound. The Juneau was later deployed to the Persian Gulf during Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm and was involved in the relief operations for Somalia. A service-life extension program has been developed to permit the Juneau to operate an additional 10-15 years.
