Unique teamwork among the U.S. Navy, the Marine Corps and Ingalls Shipbuilding has molded an entirely new generation of multipurpose amphibious assault ships - the WASP (LHD 1) Class.
As the centerpiece of an Amphibious Ready Group - transporting, deploying, commanding, and supporting every element of a Marine Landing Force - or in a standalone role for humanitarian or power projection missions, no other class of amphibious assault ships projects the worldwide, multimission versatility and capability of an LHD.
Ingalls’ delivery of USS WASP (LHD 1) in 1989 ushered in a new era in the production of amphibious ships - an era that continued in October 1992 with the commissioning of USS ESSEX (LHD 2).
And as each additional ship in the LHD program is completed, Ingalls and the Navy/Marine Corps team demonstrate a continuing commitment to technological innovation.
Ingalls uses a systems approach - a synergistic method in which the shipyard’s capabilities are fully utilized, from concept to delivery to combat readiness - to produce LHDs. This systems approach enables Ingalls to apply its proven, efficient modular production techniques to the assembly line construction of the world’s most technologically advanced surface warships.
LHD amphibious assault ships from Ingalls Shipbuilding.
A fleet-proven asset - supporting a global quest for peace through strength.

industrial base cannot survive. There is no industrial alternative that requires the skills that are unique to the submarine industry.
Experts have testified that it would take ten years and billions of dollars to reconstitute this national strategic asset.
In an effort to save money in the short term, America could well lose a capability we’ll surely need in the long term.
Additionally, more than 450 companies in 37 states are directly involved with the design and manufacture of critical components for America’s submarines. These combined capabilities have kept America the world leader in this vital defense category.
America’s “Silent Service,” the world’s brightest and most highly trained military organization, has employed these capabilities to achieve an enviable record of safety and performance.
Unfortunately, America’s submarine leadership now stands threatened by proposed defense cutbacks. Without maintaining a limited rate of construction, the submarine

LANDING CRAFT AIR CUSHION EFFECTIVE IN WAR MID PEACE.
"THIS WAS THE LAR6IST AMPHIBIOUS OPERATION SINCE KOREA,
AMD THEY WERE SENSATIONAL."
WE BRING TREMENDOUS CAPABILITIES IN TERMS OF LOGISTICAL AIRCRAFT. LANDING CRAFT.. .TO MOVE MATERIALS TO PEOPLE WHO NEED THEM.’’
- RADM Stephen S. Clarey, Commander, Amphibious Group 3 (NNS)
United States’ sailors, Marines and soldiers used small boats, LCACs and helicopters to ferry food, clothing, fresh water, medical supplies and shelters to 1.8 million survivors. Fully loaded LCACs storming ashore gave the amphibious operation its name-Sea Angel.
From Desert Storm to Sea Angel, LCACs have proven effective in war and peace as these versatile, highspeed craft continue to perform beyond expectations.
During Operation Desert Storm, 17 D.S. Navy LCACs delivered enough combat equipment ashore to support 20,000 U.S. Marines while amphibious forces pinned down several Iraqi army divisions. In one 24 hour period, the LCACs made 55 runs without incident Respite heavy seas and prevailing 40- ^ot winds. Under combat conditions, foe Navy/Marine Corps amphibious war- fore team proved the over-the-horizon Jfoctrine effective and demonstrated OCac capabilities to project power ^hore when and where needed.
On the way home from Desert Storm, LCACs were again put to the test, this lrrie providing humanitarian assistance after a cyclone struck Bangladesh.
One hero of Desert Storm earned its stripes five fathoms down.
It utilizes computer-aided detection, has multiple operating frequencies and gathers sonar data from two independent acoustic search and classification arrays. Both arrays are located in a hydrodynamically stable, variable depth towed body.
Today this breakthrough in minehunting is entering service with the U.S. Navy and the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force. It's the latest in over 250 sonar systems that Raytheon has pioneered, developed and delivered to nations around the world.
For more information write:
Raytheon Company, Government Marketing, 141 Spring Street, Lexington, MA 02173, U.S.A
The seafloor of the Persian Gulf was littered with more than 1,000 magnetically and acoustically influenced mines.
The challenge of detecting and clearing them was met by a new underseas hero - the AN/SQQ-32 variable depth minehunting sonar system developed by Raytheon and Thomson-CSF of France.
At work in the Gulf, it exceeded all expectations.
Deployed aboard the USS Avenger, this was the first sonar to locate and identify live influence-type bottom mines in combat.
The SQQ-32 is the new generation in minehunting sonar. It delivers superior performance for ship safety, area coverage, detection and classification range, and mine localization.

Mk 45: a versatile weapon for today’s defense.
Emerging missions for contingency and limited objective warfare demand weapons that are both accurate and flexible. As the main gun aboard major surface combatants of the U.S. Navy, the Mk 45 is relied upon for midrange anti-surface, strike, and fire support missions. It provides our surface combatants the versatility and firepower to limit escalation of conflict, guard vital sea lanes, and protect U.S. interests on a global scale.
The Mk 45 fires all types of 5-inch 54 caliber ammunition. Rounds can be selected in any required sequence from a mixed magazine. It is the most compact, lightweight 5-inch gun ever built, and is proven in modular, containerized applications. Mk 45 can be fitted aboard ships as small as 2000 tons.
Designed for any combat environment, the Mk 45 is water-tight, and has de-icing and NBC protection. As proof of system integrity, Mk 45 is the only gun larger than 30mm to have passed the U.S. Navy’s stringent barge shock test to Military Standard 901C.
Long proven aboard U.S. Navy cruisers, destroyers and amphibious assault ships, Mk 45 is fast becoming the naval gun of choice for many other fleets. Installations include Turkish YAVUZ class and scheduled Track II frigates, and new ‘construction ships for Greece, Australia, and New Zealand. In total, more than 150 systems have been delivered worldwide.
FMC is the source of Mk 45 design, production and operational support on a global basis. For more information, write FMC Corporation, Naval Systems Division, 4800 East River Road, Minneapolis, MN 55421-1498,(612) 571-9201.

Our letterhead reads McDonnell Douglas Missile Systems Company. In truth, it could also read McDonnell Douglas Weapon Control Systems. As well as Mission Planning Systems, Guidance Systems, Operational Flight Software, Systems Engineering and Integration, and Depot Support. All of which makes us the world leader in total cruise missile system design and integration.
See, we don’t just manufacture cruise missiles. We design and build cruise missile systems. It’s this commitment that proved successful in improving the quality of Tomahawk and the Advanced Cruise Missile. And our commitment proves itself in every Harpoon and SLAM that rolls off our line.
And that’s the difference between just making cruise missiles ... and Total Cruise Control.
