SCIENCE SCOPE
U.S. military aircraft crews will now be protected against laser threats. Together with the U.S. Army, Hughes Aircraft Company has developed a warning system for U.S. helicopter crews subjected to laser threats. The AN/AVR-2 Laser Detecting Set (LDS) detects, identifies and characterizes optical signals 360-degrees around the aircraft. Interfacing with a Radar Signal Detection Set, the system also functions as an integrated radar and laser warning receiver system. The Army and Marine Corps have successfully completed testing and initiated production of this laser detecting system, which will soon be standard equipment on their combat helicopters.
A new navigational aid will help pilots flying the night attack version of the U.S. Navy’s and Marine Corps’ F/A-18 Hornet aircraft see through smoke, haze, darkness and adverse weather. The main element of the Hornet’s night attack system is a forward-looking infrared (FLIR) sensor, called a Thermal Imaging Navigation Set (TINS). The TINS, made by Hughes and designated AN/AAR-50, generates a daytime, TV-like image of the dark world ahead of the aircraft and presents this image on an improved “raster” head-up display (HUD). The improved HUD and TINS systems will allow passive low-level navigational and - along with a targeting FLIR - help pilots locate, identify and attack ground targets at night.
A self-contained plasma source will help prolong the life of satellites in space. The source, part of the Flight Model Discharge System (FMDS), developed and built by Hughes for the U.S. Air Force, produces a dilute low-energy plasma cloud near the spacecraft’s surface. This cloud effectively “grounds” the vehicle by forming a conductive bridge that electrically couples the vehicle’s outer surfaces to each other and to the plasma of space. Without FMDS, electrical charges from ionized gases could build up on the spacecraft, causing arcing that could damage delicate electronic equipment.
Combat pilots will be able to acquire targets and launch up to four Infrared Maverick, Air-to-Ground Missiles, with less “head-down” time than it takes to manually aim and fire one missile. The rapid fire system, demonstrated by Hughes, scans the missile seeker’s I.R. video image, and selects likely targets from background clutter by analyzing size, shape and contrast. The system then assigns each missile to a different selected target for pilot confirmation and launch.
Television viewers will soon experience the sensation of sitting in the front row of a concert or stage production thanks to a new sound system that recreates the dynamic range of the original performance. The system, developed by Hughes and called the Sound Retrieval System™ (SRS®), retrieves and restores spatial information present in all acoustic situations. SRS supplies the spatial cues which enable the human ear to discern the source or location of the sound. Listeners can turn their heads or move about the room and still hear the live effect, while the position of a soloist or vocalist at center stage is maintained. SRS operates on both stereo and monaural signals without the need for encoded program material.

The Typhoon Is Caught
These recent photographs of a Soviet Typhoon-class ballistic missile submarine (SSBN) in a Northern Fleet floating dry dock confirm the accuracy of the model shown earlier in Proceedings (January 1989, page 73). Significant features not previously seen include fixed bilge keels and the seven-blade, outward-rotating, scimitar-shaped, shrouded propellers. The immense bulk of the Typhoons, which displace 25,000 tons submerged, is apparent. Designed to operate under the Arctic ice pack, the Typhoons carry 20 SS-N-20 ballistic missiles and an estimated six torpedoes. The design incorporates two parallel pressure hulls within the outer hull, and the sail constitutes an additional separate pressure vessel. The program ended with the launch of the sixth Typhoon in 1989, but the Soviet SSBN program is continuing with the construction of Delta IVs.
