Leader Of The Pack.
Seawolf To Seawolf,
The Proud Tradition Continues
Experience under the sea. Submarine propulsion and ships service turbine generator experience. GE has more of it than anyone. It’s why our Company is eminently qualified to design, manufacture and test these critical systems for the SSN 21 Seawolf. In 1957, seatrials of the first nuclear powered Seawolf heralded another era of GE contributions to the Silent Service. Since then, the Company has continued to pioneer advanced systems aboard every class of submarine including the latest 688’s.
SSN 688 Submarines, A Technical Standard
The entire Class relies on GE systems for both propulsion and ships service electrical demands. Their reliability is extraordinary. In fact, since the commissioning of the Los Angeles in 1976, these systems endured the equivalent of hundreds of years of service without a single ship coming offline for an at-sea failure. Why? For a number of good reasons. First, GE engineers extrapolate the best ideas from existing technology and proven hardware during design and manufacture, while paying particular attention to key Navy criteria: reliability, noise, size, weight, performance, maintainability and accessibility. Then they exhaustively test each system under shipboard conditions before shipment.
On-Time Delivery, Worldwide Service
GE demonstrated construction efficiency, too, by delivering these 688 propulsion and SSTG systems to shipyards ahead of schedule. After installation, GE provides life cycle support through service facilities in every major Navy port in the U.S., and in major ports worldwide. Of course, factory experts are on-call 24 hours a day, too. Through this service team, continued evolutionary advances are made available to upgrade the existing fleet. Such upgrades aboard 688’s permit them to remain at sea years longer between overhauls.
Into The 21st Century
The heritage Edison began with the first shipboard power generation system continues at GE Naval & Drive Turbine Systems. Today, we apply the resources of our $50 billion dollar Company to develop advanced propulsion and ships service systems. It’s the critical difference GE engineers will rely on to advance the Navy mission aboard the next generation of Seawolf.

SCIENCE SCOPE

The application of Ka-band radar may produce a missile seeker highly resistant to electronic jamming. A prototype of the system, developed by Hughes Aircraft Company, successfully acquired a wide range of targets, ranging in size and speed from 155mm artillery shells to high performance aircraft, during a demonstration for the U.S. Army Strategic Defense Command. The major advantage of the seeker is its use of the Ka-band, which makes it resistant to electronic countermeasures due to its narrow beam width. The seeker, originally developed under the U.S. Navy’s Multimode Guidance program, is now being considered for the upgrade of the Army’s Patriot air defense system.
Very thin aluminum foil helps make a large radar antenna physically manageable. The 94 radio frequency (RF) vertical feeds on the electronically-steered, Hughes-built Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar System-2 (ASARS-2) antenna are made by stretch-shaping the aluminum foil, which is only six-thousandths of an inch thick, into a complex pattern. The process, called hydroforming, produces a feed which weighs about seven ounces, compared to traditional sheet-metal feeds that weigh two to three pounds each. Along with other design features, these lightweight feeds resulted in an antenna, including all its electronics, mechanics, and power supplies, that weighs only one-third as much as comparable units.
An improved flow of information between air defense command and control centers and surface- to-air missile systems will be one result of a new state-of-the-art communications link being designed by Hughes. The link, called the Intelligent Interface Processor, will provide the signal interface between AN/TSQ-73 surface-to-air missile control systems and fixed NATO Air Defense Ground Environment sites in West Germany, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands. With the new system, NATO commanders will be able to allocate targets to be engaged by missile batteries and still retain autonomy. Commanders will also be able to exchange target and status information currently available only through voice communications.
A lightweight laser-illumination warning system may soon aid combat crews in avoiding laser- supported weaponry. The system, developed by Hughes, is designed to provide tactical aircraft, combat vehicles and ships with data on a threat laser’s bearing, pulse rate, width and intensity. The sensor provides a 190-degree azimuth and 110-degree elevation field of view. The warning unit weighs less than two pounds and has been successfully flight tested aboard an F-4 and A-7D aircraft.
Television viewers will soon experience the sensation of sitting in the front row of a concert or stage production thanks to a new sound system that recreates the dynamic range of the original performance. The system, developed by Hughes and called the Sound Retrieval System™ (SRS®), retrieves and restores spatial information present in all acoustic situations. SRS supplies the spatial cues which enable the human ear to discern the source or location of the sound. Listeners can turn their heads or move about the room and still hear the live effect, while the position of a soloist or vocalist at center stage is maintained. SRS operates on both stereo and monaural signals without the need for encoded program material.

0rs the world's most powerful Navy!N
All the enemies of the Free World in this century have heard the mighty roar and felt the powerful blast of "Old Forty-Five," the most powerful military-issued pistol in history.
,. Three generations of Americans fought with it— ,rst against the Kaiser, then against the Fuhrer and the ^Peror, and twice against the Communists.
. _ If you were bom between the late 1800s and 1968,
J. ,s the symbol of your time, your day, your age. And uture Americans will look back on our time, with reverence, as the ".45 Era."
But now "Old Slabsides" is retiring from the high S|jas. the flight decks and the invasion beaches, rePlaced by the new 9mm pistol, so we can fire the same *mn*o as our NATO Allies who don't have the more
Powerful .45.
, How much longer will the .45 be made? No one nows. But while it is, we're proud to salute the oiericans of the ".45 Era" by issuing a separate, firing, onimemorative .45 in honor of each of the four AmeriCan armed forces that carried it.
24-Karat Gold Plating
The first gun in the series honors our sea service- e U.S. Navy. When you pick up this three pound slab erP *eel anc* 8old' you’ll hold the finest, firing, limited .Hon .45 ever made—especially in this reasonable Pnce category.
Custom-made grips, of furniture-finished oak, 0lhpliment the mirror-polished slide, receiver and ?n 24-Karat Gold plated parts. As a proper memo- a* to the Navy, patriotic symbols and inscriptions ?,re deeply etched and 24-Karat Gold plated across th* slide.
Your name or that of a family member can be ,ngraved on the reverse of the slide, along with other ata to make this gun a lasting, personal memorial.
Limited Edition; Fires .45 ACP
. The worldwide edition limit is only 1,911 guns, Th* nor of the year it was adopted for military use. h,s highly restricted limit guarantees rarity and col- ct°r value. Even the serial numbers are special, Inhered between 0001 and 1911, with the prefix USN" for U.S. Navy.
This is the military-model .45 M1911A1, and all arls are interchangeable with standard government
issued guns; it fires .45 ACP ammo. It is even fitted with a rare and desirable lanyard with gold-plated mounts.
Each pistol is built by the gunsmiths of Thompson/ Auto-Ordnance, the company founded by General John T. Thompson, who developed the .45 auto-loading cartridge, helped develop the .45 pistol and who invented the Thompson Submachine Gun. NRA test firings of their .45 show accuracy "significantly better than the average."
To wall mount or desktop display this museum quality firearm, a velvet lined, furniture-finished American Walnut Display Case, measuring 14"x8"x3" is available. The locking glass lid protects your invest-

Each has different exotic wood grips, historical etchings, medallions, lanyard and case liner colors and serial number prefixes appropriate to each service branch, to make all four .45s distinctive. Matching serial numbers of all four guns are available, as is a master case that holds and displays all four cases. The entire set of four is called "The Armed Forces Commemorative .45 Collection."

Transforming Research Into Reality
Destroyers, frigates, and corvettes often operate outside a fleet’s active ECM protection net. If they come under anti-ship missile attack, they must rely on their own chaff, gun, and missile systems for protection. They carry no active ECM system to confuse and deflect such threats.
That problem has been solved by Raytheon. Today, the USS Reid and USS Hawes, both frigates, have a lightweight active ECM system nicknamed Sidekick. It gives a small ship’s passive SLQ-32(V)2 electronic warfare system the active capability needed to support all ocean operations.
At the request of the U.S. Na'^)v< Raytheon designed, produced, ^ Ct delivered the Sidekick in 11 week Only our long experience in cre^1 ing advanced EW systems for the|H U.S. Navy and Air Force made n such a quick response possible.
Once again, strict adherence11 the fundamentals of multibeam technology, antenna design, and systems management enabled Raytheon to meet an important defense need.

THREE GENERATIONS OF QUALITY AND DEPENDABILITY MAKE WESTINGHOUSE THE CLEAR CHOICE FOR SEAWOLF
“Westinghouse makes them quieter, lighter, more powerful and cost effective.” It’s more than just a slogan, it's a fact, borne out by three generations of top quality submarine propulsion systems—GELREP IPMP I and now, IPMP II, the SSN-21 main propulsion unit.. .the latest generation of quiet power designed for Seawolf.
To meet all the SSN-21 requirements, Westinghouse invested over $42 million to expand our manufacturing capabilities. We assembled a team of design, manufacturing and product support professionals second to none—a team whose abilities were proven on the successful GELREP and IPMP I programs. And we've continued to refine and improve the design and ensure the quality of our submarine propulsion systems. The result is a lightweight, low noise main propulsion unit that gives new meaning to the phrase “quiet power."
From design through manufacturing, to field support, you can depend on Westinghouse... clearly the low-risk choice for Seawolf.

The Discovery of the Bismarck
By Robert D. Ballard
with Rick Archbold/lntroduction by Ludovic Kennedy “Titanic team finds Bismarck" ran the headlines on June 14 1989, announcing Robert Ballard's discovery of Hitler's greatest battleship. Using the same underwater camera vehicle that located the wreck of the Titanic in 1985, Ballard and his team photographed the Bismarck sitting proudly upright three miles below the surface of the Atlantic, her huge guns pointing eerily skyward.

I | 113 |3|^ I II | u.S. submarine force with its most potent weapon ever. Designed by
A V/1V1 MIjMS Hughes Aircraft Company and the U.S. Navy, ADCAP is now entering service with the fleet and has the flexibility of a software-based guidance system that can counter the evolving threat. Due to the importance of the ADCAP torpedo to the Navy, Hughes has ensured that the Navy will get high-reliability torpedoes at a low cost.
Confidence In Quality With Low Cost - Hughes has established the world's most modern torpedo manufacturing facility to produce this new technology weapon. The result is an efficient, low-cost production center that uses advanced techniques to ensure top quality. With Hughes’ commitment to continuous
measurable improvement, we are seeing daily reductions in the cost to produce ADCAP while simultaneously pushing quality and reliability well above the Navy’s requirements. In fact, in some areas of the manufacturing process, we have achieved a zero defect rate.
Confidence In The Future — Equally important is the ability to evolve the torpedo with the changing threat. Because of a unique understanding of the torpedo’s design, Hughes can provide the modifications to ADCAP that will keep it ahead of the Navy’s needs. With Hughes’ proven ability to lead in a changing world, ADCAP will be the torpedo of choice well into the next century.

TIN MORE REASONS FOR SUB COMMANDERS TO LOSE SLEEP.
They tried to dive deeper and run quieter. They tried harder than ever to hide.
But subs all over the world couldn’t get away from the winners of the 1989 Captain Arnold Jay Isbell trophy. Awarded by the U.S. Navy for excellence in airborne
antisubmarine warfare, the Isbell trophy has been sponsored by Lockheed since 1970.

In the 1990’s, American defense contractors are facing a threat they never anticipated: the end of the Cold War. This event is the best news in 45 years. It also presents a real opportunity to redefine our country’s defense requirements.
To meet these changing require ments and reduce spending at the same time,
defense contractors must apply cost- effective technologies. Technologies that will help reshape our military into a more flexible, versatile, efficient force.
Grumman is at work on these technologies now. We’re developing an airborne surveillance system that can look deep beyond national borders. It’s a reliable, affordable way to monitor troop movements as we cut back our own ground force commitments.
Technology has always been America’s best defense. And Grumman has the technologies that make sense today.

Tinian. The name says command. An appropriate thought for the Navy’s new ASW attack helicopter. The Kaman SH-2G.
Already in production, the SH-2G builds upon the proven record of the SH-2F. The Navy’s ^ost recent evolution of the unbeatable Kaman design.
But we’ve upgraded it with two powerhouse T700 engines. New bionics. And high-performance dynamics.
Now there’s even an on-board acoustic processor for totally autonomous missions against submarines. Plus superb sonobouy and sonar capabilities.
When the situation gets hot, the SH-2G lets you add critical components. Like dipping sonar.
An array of missiles and special weapons. And more advanced ESM.
All of which help counter increasingly sophisticated threats at sea. And on land.
That’s what it takes to deliver performance. Now. And well into the 21st century.

Pull support Anytime, anywhere.
In defense systems, first cost is "nportant, but reliability and maintainability count more. As Admiral Arleigh |Urke once said, “If the equipment doesn’t work in battle, it doesn’t make j^uch difference how much else we know, the battle is lost — and so are the People in it.”
Since 1938, FMC Naval Systems ■vision has been the principal design a8ent and producer of guns and missile j’ystems aboard U.S. Navy surface combatants. Today, all FMC-built systems ‘'hoard eommissioned vessels are ready for battle. They will never be lost for lack of access to parts, service or training.
We offer assurance that every FMC system is not only effective in battle, but can be maintained and supported at reasonable cost. And with a high degree of modularity in design, ORDALTS are possible to upgrade and extend life cycles well into the next century.
FMC field services range from shipyard installation to operational training to overhaul and upgrades. Services are extended to ships at sea, at FMC-operatcd pierside facilities on both U.S. coasts, or any designated port in the world. All service is performed by a large network of technical representatives, backed by the Surface Warfare Overhaul/Repair Depot (SWORD), a U.S. Navy-designated facility located at FMC’s Naval Systems
Division.
We are committed to serve the fleet anywhere, anytime in support of every weapon we build. For more information, write FMC Corporation, Naval Systems Division, 4800 East River Road, Minneapolis, MN 55421-1498.

HOW CAN ATOP-OF-THE-LINE MISSILE HELP YOU SURVIVE BOTTOM LINE PRESSURES?
survivable, it carefully conceals its approach by skimming along the surface in an evasive flight path. And Tomahawk hits the mark, too—it’s one of the most accurate weapon systems in the world- At a time when every dollar spent on America’s defense must do more, Tomahawk is a low-cost way of committing force virtually anywhere in the world with minimum exposure of our aircraft or surface ships. Tomahawk—a tested and proven system- It’s tough to think of a smarter defense investment.
When the debate focuses on the bottom line, the U.S. Navy’s Tomahawk cruise missile, built by the McDonnell Douglas Missile Systems Company (MDMSC), is one weapon that comes out a winner every time. Alone, or in conjunction with tactical aircraft, Tomahawk can be launched from either surface ships or submarines against targets on shore or at sea. It can be armed with a conventional unitary warhead for surgical strikes or with submunitions to attack multiple targets. Amazingly
A company of leaders.
