SUPER TRACKER
The first fully militarized parallel processor ever to fly is now at work. Aboard the E-2C, Loral ASPRO (Associative Processor) computers allow a single aircraft to keep track of thousands of targets (and possible targets) over a scanning area of 3 million cubic miles.
Another version, for underseas, over- the-horizon targeting, is now in production and has twice as much processing power (100 million operations per second). To date, over 50 systems have been delivered. Like most Loral programs, they came in on spec, on time, on budget.

SCIENCE SCOPE
A laser system acquired, tracked, and destroyed a supersonic target in a test for the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization and the U.S. Navy. The laser system used a Hughes Aircraft Company-built collection of mirrors, sensors, and alignment and stabilization equipment, called a Sea Lite Beam Director. Sea Lite is designed to acquire and track a supersonic Vandal missile, focus an external high-energy laser beam at a point on the moving target, and hold the. beam at the same position long enough to disable the missile. The test was the conclusion of a two-year effort to validate the use of a high energy laser system against targets in flight.
Ajiew mobile air conditioning module will provide integrated environmental control for ground-based radar systems. The first System Support Module (SSM), developed by Hughes for the AN/TPQ-37 Firefinder weapon locating radar, was delivered to the Army of the Republic of Egypt. In the field, the SSM enables Firefinder to function efficiently in hot or humid areas. The SSM consists of a militarized air conditioner, ducting, power interface cabling, and lifting gear mounted on a pallet designed to receive a Firefinder operations shelter. The Firefinder system is designed to provide automatic, fast and accurate location of artillery, mortars, and rocket launchers.
An innovative computer program dramatically reduces the hours required to model the performance of new missile designs. Called Generic Missile Simulation (GEMS), the software, created by Hughes, cuts the evaluation time of new missile designs from six months to one to 20 days, depending on the ’ complexity of the missile. The time saving is accomplished because GEMS contains a library of generic building blocks needed for missile system simulation. These building blocks are combined, or modified, as necessary to simulate a new missile design. In the past, each new design required its own, unique simulation software.
A new generation of soldering systems allows unskilled operators to solder with high reliability The new hot bar soldering systems, built by Hughes and called the HRS-86 series, allow precise control of temperature, pressure, and operation sequence. The systems feature highly visible and easy-to-use controls to reduce errors, and a new construction that minimizes tip skidding The new units are designed to handle very large circuit boards and will typically be used to solder edge connectors, flex circuits, and quad packages to circuit boards.
Afighter aircraft’s radar will soon be used to test cruise missiles. The radar system the Hughes APG-63, originally built for the F-15 fighter, is being modified for the U.S. Air Force to perform missile tracking functions and simultaneously search the flight path for intruder aircraft during flight. The APG-63 equipped plane will perform the functions of the six to ten aircraft currently required for such tests, including recording telemetry data. In addition to tracking the missiles at great distances, the modified APG-63 system will be capable of re-acquiring the target, if necessary, by computing its location through the instant comparison of radar and telemetry data.

She’s the brand-new flagship of the Turkish navy, and Blohm +Voss built her using their Modular Functional Unit System.
This new construction method meant that the Raytheon-developed and -produced AN/SQS-56 sonar, vital to this Meko 200 class frigate’s antisubmarine mission, was delivered housed in a single, completely integrated module. Once lowered into place through a deck opening, all the system needed was to be bolted down and to have its electrical connections hooked up. The Functional Unit System enabled the shipyard to install thirty completely functional weapons and electronics systems in only fifteen days.
The Yavuz's SQS-56 will enable her to locate and classify targets in either the passive or active mode. The system is compact and easy to operate and has low life-cycle costs. Yet its detection ranges have consistently bee11 the maximum possible under existing environmental conditions. More than 100 of these sonars are already being used by U.S. and foreign naval ships ranging from 720 to 3,600 tons.

Let’s hear it for the silent service.
There are those in the Navy one simply doesn’t hear much about. The men who work 16 hours a day, seven days a week, closed off from the rest of the world for up to 70 days at a time.
They’re the hunters, the protectors, among the most highly trained of America’s servicemen. Electric Boat salutes the Submariners. Even in the deepest reaches GENERAL DYNAMICS of the sea, their commitment to America reaches to the stars. A Strong Company For A strong Country
All ahead full.
The mission: Ensure the U.S. Navy’s fleet performance remains unsurpassed.
Today, the unparalleled service life and reliability of LM2500 powered patrol boats, guided missile frigates, destroyers, Aegis Cruisers, and fast combat support ships have helped bring fleet readiness to an all time high.
At sea, the high speed efficiency of LM 2500 gas turbine propulsion has contributed significantly to fleet range and endurance. At the same time, the compact design of these remarkable engines has provided the space needed for the sophisd- cated systems that give today’s ships such awesome offensive and defensive capabilides.
But maintaining the superiority of today’s surface fleet calls for forward thinking and bold acuon.
To meet the challenge, GE’s gas turbine team is condnuously advancing propulsion technology with innovadve systems for Navy ships of the next generation, whether they’re conventional hulls, SES or SWATH. Propulsion and power systems that provide the design flexibility, performance and cost effecdveness a future of superiority at sea demands.

THREE GENERATIONS OF QUALITY AND DEPENDABILITY MAKE WESTINGHOUSE THE CLEAR CHOICE FOR SEAWOLF
“Westinghouse makes them quieter, lighter, more powerful and cost effective.” It's more than just a slogan, it's a fact, borne out by three generations of top quality submarine propulsion systems—GELREP IPMP I and now, IPMP II, the SSN-21 main propulsion unit... the latest generation of quiet power designed for Seawolf.
To meet all the SSN-21 requirements, Westinghouse invested over $42 million to expand our manufacturing capabilities. We assembled a team of design, manufacturing and product support professionals second to none—a team whose abilities were proven on the successful GELREP and IPMP I programs. And we’ve continued to refine and improve the design and ensure the quality of our submarine propulsion systems. The result is a lightweight, low noise main propulsion unit that gives new meaning to the phrase “quiet power.”
From design through manufacturing, to field support, you can depend on Westinghouse... clearly the low-risk choice for Seawolf.

WHAT IT REALLY NEEDS IS A NEW SET OF WINGS.
Modern naval operations are inconceivable without air defense. It is a tenet that has been accepted ever since Billy Mitchell sank a battleship with his bombers in 1921. All great naval confrontations since then have been decided from the air.
This is still true. Today a fleet can no more deploy without air defense than it could without seaworthy hulls.
But the effectiveness of naval air defense is a transitory state. The Corsair that swept the skies of the Pacific in 1944 gave way to the jet of the Korean War. And the Phantom of the ’60s stepped aside for the Tomcat.
Almost overnight, the world has changed dramatically. As a consequence, the need to keep the sea-lanes open is more vital than ever, and therefore so is the Navy’s need for unyielding air defense. Today’s carrier-based fighter, built with yesterday’s technology, will soon become obsolete.
The next U.S. Naval fighter should take advantage of stealth technology. It should have greater range, longer on-station time, lower manpower requirements, and come at an affordable cost. And it should beat any new fighter that will come onto the world market in the next few decades.
It should be the F-22. It’s what our Navy needs to protect the seas in the 21st century.

DCRSI is rugged, compact, and light.
It comes in three different configurations to better match your applications: laboratory, airborne and Tempest. With built-in 96 Mbit FIFO solid state memory emulation and incremental tape motion, the DCRSi can record or play at infinitely variable data rates, continuously or in bursts, greatly simplifying the complexity of user interfaces.
Coupled with industry standard control formats and optional I/O interlaces, including APTEC,VAXBI,VME, Q-bus and
/n space, in the air, on land, on the sea and under it... more than 300 Ampex DCRSi rotary digital data cassette recorders are at work today gathering critical information. They have become the de facto standard for high-performance, high-density data recording.
The DCRSi is available off-the-shelf, and has the ability to record data for one hour or more, at rates that can vary continuously from 0 to 107 megabits/sec. Just one durable cassette can store 48 gigabytes.
KEVLAR PROVIDES UNIFORM PROTECTION WHERE
IT COUNTS.
And when protection counts, the choice is fragment- resistant vests and helmets of KEVLAR aramid fiber from Du Pont. The fact is, KEVLAR sets the standard for protection throughout the free world.

Mk 45: more gun for the 90’s.
The Mk 45 Gun System is, and will continue to be, a major element in the projection of naval power, h serves the Navy and Marine forces in limiting the escalation of conflicts, guarding vital sea lanes and protecting American lives around the world, while contributing to the point defense of surface combatants.
Now, a significant upgrade of the Mk 45 is in development. It’s happening at FMC in a program to provide the Navy with an advanced design based on the current Mk 45.
With new materials and redesign of major components, the performance and mission coverage of the MK 45 will change.
Among the many improvements: increased elevation and rate of fire to counter airborne threats; a new loading system designed for easier, less costly
maintenance; extensive use of composites to control system weight; a new shield with more room, configured to minimize radar signature; and significant overall improvement in reliability/maintainability/ availability.
Additionally, with many of the new subsystems designed for back-fit and forward-fit, all current Mk 45 systems can be upgraded.
Extended life, lower cost, a better gun.
This is our mission, to provide the means for effective, affordable defense. FMC Corporation, Naval Systems Division, Box 59043, 4800 East River Road, Minneapolis, MN 55459-0043.

A design with life cycle advantages
Seawolf is the first major underseas weapons system designed on a computer, and specifically for modular construction. But this design goes beyond just original construction.
Developed with our exclusive threedimensional solid graphics system, the
Newport News Shipbuilding
A Tenneco Company Newport News, Virginia 23607
design also factors in Seawolf’s life cycle needs in maintenance and logistics support.
It’s a design for now, and one we can keep current through every change during the ship’s lifetime.
And it’s a design our Navy can rely on to meet its challenges of the future.
