Anti-submarine warfare and fleet protection are two of Loral's areas of concentration. Our capabilities span the broad range of underseas warfare, including guidance and training. Our technologies cover digital and hydroacoustic signal processing, recognition, and simulation.
On-going R&D programs at Loral support these technologies and produce a steady stream of component improvements that enhance entire systems.
We also bring a bias to action to every project-a management emphasis on "no surprises," a reputation for bringing in projects on time, on budget, on spec.
And the same is true whether it's ASW, or self-protection, or C3, or simulation, or any of our other chosen areas.
Loral: It's a good synonym for defense electronics.

Department For The Navy
“Maintaining leadership in propulsion and ships service systems is our primary mission.”
i v i
L.A. Carlstrom General Manager
Naval & Drive Turbine Systems XJ
Powering the U.S. Navy. GE has been the Navy's foremost partner in propelling and electrifying her proud ships for more than a century. We are working today to extend this partnership into the Twenty-first Century.
Focus On The Navy
The U.S. Navy is the primary customer of Naval 8c Drive Turbine Systems. As a critical component of America’s third largest defense contractor, our charter is to focus the resources of our 40 billion dollar Company to meet the Navy’s need for technology, quality, cost and delivery. We design, manufacture and test all GE shipboard steam propulsion, gear, and ships service power generation systems. In addition, we are developing a number of “futuristic” systems including electric drive.
Electric Drive Propulsion
Recently, the CNO announced an intention to power future Navy surface combatants with electric drive propulsion systems. We were pleased to learn last November that Naval & Drive Turbine Systems was awarded an 89.5 million dollar contract to develop electric drive. On this program, we bring together the capabilities and resources of GE Corporate Research 8c Development, Drive Systems, Ordnance Systems, and Aircraft Engine Business Group, along with our people in Fitchburg and Lynn, Massachusetts; Bangor, Maine; and Schenectady, New York. Within these organizations, Navy experts will apply their experience, and use some of the world’s most modern equipment, to create a state-of-the-art propulsion system that is versatile, quiet and highly efficient. We wish to thank the Navy for entrustingthis vital program to GE.
A Proud Tradition
The heritage Edison began with the first shipboard power generation system continues at Naval & Drive Turbine Systems. Today, GE powers the Navy fleet from large aircraft carriers and submarines to small auxiliary ships. Tomorrow, electric drive will broaden the Navy’s capability in the Twenty-first Century and enable us to carry-on our primary mission... to maintain leadership in propulsion and ships service systems for the U.S. Navy.

WHEN THE NAVY WANTED “QUIET POWER” FOR THEIR LOS ANGELES- CLASS SUBMARINES, THEY TURNED TO US.
Following the selection of Westinghouse to demonstrate the first generation of hardened and ground gear technology aboard a Permit-class submarine, the Navy once again chose us to develop the propulsion system for the improved Los Angeles-class submarines. This second generation, high power density propulsion system is much lighter than the system it replaces and provides significantly higher torque while meeting the Navy’s stringent noise requirements. . '
Now we’re ready with our third generation of “quiet power” for the SSN-21 Seawolf-class submarines.
From the Permit, to the Los Angeles, to the Seawolf-class, each generation of Westinghouse propulsion technology has taken ' “quiet” one step further for the Submarine Navy.

SCIENCE SCOPE
An advanced concept in helicopter dipping sonar will provide a significant increase in anti-submarine warfare (ASW) capability. Under development by Hughes Aircraft Company for the U.S. Navy’s Airborne Low Frequency Sonar (ALFS) program, the new sonar is designed to operate from both the LAMPS MKIII and the CV helicopters. This will enhance the Navy’s Airborne ASW effectiveness in both inner and middle zones of battle group deployment. Hughes, and its teammate Thomson Sintra ASM, will demonstrate the performance of this new sonar in flight tests aboard an SH-60B helicopter in early 1989. The team’s ALFS concept embodies leading-edge technologies in the areas of high gain acoustic arrays, electro-mechanical kinematics, fluid dynamics, signal processing and man-machine interfaces.
Five additional operating modes will be offered on a fire-control radar for the U.S. Air Force’s new AC-130U special forces air-to-ground gunship. Under development by Hughes, the radar will be a modified version of Hughes’ APG-70 radar operational on the F-15E Eagle. The APG-70 radar features high-resolution ground mapping and air-to-ground weapon delivery features. The new modes on the gunship version will include fixed-target track, ground moving target indication and tracking, projectile impact point position, beacon track, and a “weather mode” for radar-directed firing under reduced visibility conditions. Flight testing of the gunship radar is scheduled to begin in 1990, with production starting in 1991.
A new AGM-65 Maverick missile has the capability to attack an expanded target spectrum, including strategic land targets and ships. The AGM-65G, built for the U.S. Air Force by Hughes, utilizes software and armament different from previous Air Force Mavericks, and also introduces a pneumatic actuation system which, combined with a new digital autopilot, provides substantial cost savings. The G version’s armament system also incorporates a 300-pound warhead with a selectable fuze delay which can penetrate hard structures before detonation, a feature proven effective against ships and hardened installations.
A new semiconductor device may significantly improve the performance of amplifiers at ultra-high frequencies. A new material system applied to the High Electron Mobility Transistor (HEMT), pioneered and developed by Hughes, uses a layered combination of gallium indium arsenide, aluminum indium arsenide, and indium phosphide to produce an amplifier that performs well at ultra-high frequencies with greatly reduced noise levels. Using HEMT devices, direct broadcast satellite receiving systems can be built using dish antennas less than three feet in diameter. Other potential uses are in digital circuits for high-speed radar signal processing and in high power millimeter-wave circuits.
A palm-size supercomputer being developed by Hughes for the U.S. Air Force is designed to offer data processing speeds in excess of 100 billion operations per second. In a radical departure from conventional computer design, the new computer processes its signals in a three-dimensional network and will have capacities to rival today’s room-size systems. Consisting of a number of stacked integrated circuit wafers, the 3-D computer utilizes tiny “microbridges” and feedthroughs to provide an unprecedented degree of interconnectivity and a high degree of parallel processing. The combination of ultra-high speeds and low power consumption in such tiny packages is expected to make 3-D computers ideally suited for image processing systems and signal processing of complex radar information.

This is the Navy’s newest air ASW system in action. The LAMPS MK III (Light, Airborne Multi-Purpose System), a totally integrated surface/air system, has detected and is localizing an “enemy” submarine using a SPARTON SSQ-62B sonobuoy as its mobile sonar. The SSQ-62B (DICASS—Directional Command Active Sonobuoy System), which was developed and produced by SPARTON DEFENSE ELECTRONICS, is the most cost effective active sonobuoy in the world today. The current DICASS sonobuoy costs less than 60% of what it cost in 1982 and those are real dollars.
Its reduced cost and improved active capability provides the required flexibility for all our fleet air ASW platforms.
SPARTON is the only sonobuoy manufacturer to have designed and produced every type of active Sonobuoy used by the U.S. Navy in over the past 30 years.
At our production plants in Florida, SPARTON is building every type of sonobuoy that the fleet deploys today. Plus, we are working in research and development on the next generation of air ASW sensors at our ASW Technical Center in Jackson, Michigan.
