Statement of Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird Before the Senate Committee on Armed Services Amendments to the FY 1969 Supplemental and FY 1970 Defense Budget
March 19, 1969
Mr. Chairman and Members of the Committee:
I come before you today with rather mixed emotions. On the one hand, I am happy to be back in the familiar surroundings of the Committee Hearing Room, an environment which I found most congenial during my sixteen years in the Congress. On the other hand, I have an uneasy feeling that I may be on the wrong side of the table—where one is expected to have good answers and not just good questions.
It is good to be here, Mr. Chairman. I welcome the opportunity to meet with you and the members of this Committee for the first time in my new role as Secretary of Defense. I look forward to a most cordial and productive relationship with this and other Committees of the Congress concerned with National Defense.
