For more than 75 years, photography has appeared in the pages of the United States Naval Institute Proceedings, supplementing the written word, providing a growing, graphic history of the world's navies and their maritime environment. With the publication of the following pictorial, the Proceedings introduces the Naval Institute's annual naval and maritime photography contest to its pages. The objective is to bring forth, year after year, those photographs which through their excellence will serve to document best the many aspects, both changing and unchanging, of the naval and maritime scene. Here, then, chosen from more than 1,500 entries, is the Naval Institute's selection of the ten outstanding naval and maritime photographs taken during 1964 and 1965.
