A Footnote to the Current History of the China Incident
The political situation in the Far East had rapidly deteriorated from the Lukouchiao Incident at Marco Polo Bridge on July 7, 1937, through the Hungjao Incident of August 9, which spread the undeclared war to Shanghai and the Yangtze Valley. Across the Yellow Sea from Japan, the foreign residents of Tsingtao watched developments with increasing concern. When, during August and September, the Japanese community was evacuated on orders from Tokyo, it became apparent that a Japanese military adventure against the former German District of Kiaochow was imminent.
