On September 12, 1938, at 10:30 a.m., the U.S.S. Honolulu glided from her berth at the Naval Operating Base, Norfolk, Virginia, en route to Gravesend, England. As her band played “Aloha Oe,” gracefully and lightly she swept from the dock seemingly possessed with the rhythm and charm of that beautiful Hawaiian farewell.
