The old gray mare she ain't what she used to be
Many long years ago
As the gray hairs replace the few remaining darker ones on a man's scalp, reminiscence becomes a more favored indoor sport. One sees the Navy in perspective; wherein full attention has been given to creature comforts in ship's design, every means known to science utilized to insure speed and accuracy in gunnery, communication so aggrandized that it has become nearly as important as gunnery, submarines and aircraft indispensable to fleet strategy and tactics, tactical maneuvers all in the day's work, and general quarters just another drill. Then one's memory turns back a few pages in the Navy's life book—not so very many—and brings up "those days" in the Asiatic Fleet; when, even then, old-timers were lamenting the passing of wooden ships and iron men.
