Backward, turn backward,
O time in your flight!
NOTE.—The writer was requested to prepare the following authentic and yet unpublished outline of established events in connection with the old Naval School and Naval Academy from 1845 to 1904. Fragments of information were obtained from old records, drawings, etc., now available at the Naval Academy, from incidents related by old residents now living, and from the writer's personal knowledge of the old Naval Academy just prior to the beginning of the construction of the new buildings in 1900. In an effort to make this article more interesting and for the purpose of easy identification of locations and events, the writer portrays the fancied return of a phantom visitor to the scenes of his boyhood days, who meets a fellow-visitor of the present day and invites him to accompany him on a tour of the Naval Academy, pointing out the various points of interest of the old school in relation to the new Academy and making a comparison of the relative locations of the old streets, buildings, etc. However, the story as presented regarding dates, locations, events, etc., is historically correct.
