With regard to the qualifications for the CEO/Publisher, the most critical is that the individual be a good leader. This is a person who will embrace the open forum and stand up for it in the face of heavy pressure. It also requires a person of high energy, one who is open to new ideas and able to make decisions, build consensus, and enforce accountability—the ability, in a word, to execute.
Other important qualifications are:
- A clear understanding and appreciation of the mission and role of the Naval Institute
- Experience running and growing a business/business unit
- Military experience in one of the sea services with an outstanding professional reputation
- Demonstrated excellence in administration
- Membership in the Naval Institute
- Experience working with boards
- Skill in public speaking
- Past participation in Naval Institute activities—writing for publication, taking part in seminars, service on Boards, etc.
Individuals interested in applying for the position should send their cover letters and resumes to: Human Resources, U.S. Naval Institute, 291 Wood Road, Annapolis, MD 21402; e-mail: [email protected].
While this important task works its way, we are progressing on many fronts. The new, strong Fall 2003 Book Catalog is on the street, featuring an Iraqi Freedom title with a foreword by General Tommy Franks and a title commemorating the best 100 military aircraft on the 100th anniversary of flight. Forum 2003 in Washington, D.C., and Warfare 2003 in Virginia Beach will combine strong programs on current issues and broad military and defense industry support.
Let us all dare to read, think, speak, and write.
