Self-protection.
Radar warning is our middle name.
In fact, that's where the company started 37 years ago.
Since then, we've maintained our leading edge technologies in radar warning systems. We've also added electronic jamming, IR countermeasures, missile guidance and expendable chaff and flares Add to these our experience in large systems and systems integration projects, and you've got a company that can ansvve a wide variety of needs in airborne and shipboard self-protection and fleet defens We also bring a bias to action to every project-a management emphasis on "no surprises," a reputation for bringing in projects on time, on budget, on spec.
And the same thing is true whether it self-protection, or C3, or ASW, or simulati0 ' or any of our other business areas.

long-range weapon system—the most potent of AEGIS weapons that give new meaning to the words, naval presence.
As one of the principal developers of the VLS, FMC’s Naval Systems Division designed the first eight-cell module and produced it for initial firing tests. Now, in the 29-and 6l-cell configurations, it is the major weapon element of AEGIS platforms, enabling the fleet to prevail in high-threat zones of vital interest to our nation.
In addition to manufacture, FMC provides fully integrated logistics support of the VLS. This includes ship integration and installation assistance, provisioning, spares, field service and simulation training systems.
FMC has long operated the largest facility in the world for design, development and production of naval armament.

“Maintaining leadership in propulsion and ships service systems is our primary mission.”
L.A. Carlstrom General Manager Naval & Drive Turbine Systems
Powering the U.S. Navy. GE has been the Navy's foremost partner in propelling and electrifying her proud ships for more than a century. We are working today to extend this partnership into the Twenty-first Century.
Focus On The Navy
The U.S. Navy is the primary customer of Naval 8c Drive Turbine Systems. As a critical component of America’s third largest defense contractor, our charter is to focus the resources of our 40 hi 11 i on dollar Company to meet the Navy’s need for technology, quality, cost and delivery. We design, manufacture and test all GE shipboard steam propulsion, gear, and ships service power generation systems. In addition, we are developing a number of “futuristic” systems including electric drive.
Electric Drive Propulsion
Recently, the CNO announced an intention to power future Navy surface combatants with electric drive propulsion systems. We were pleased to learn last November that Naval & Drive Turbine Systems was awarded an 89.5 million dollar contract to develop electric drive. On this program, we bring together the capabilities and resources of GE Corporate Research & Development, Drive Systems, Ordnance Systems, and Aircraft Engine Business Group, along with our people in Fitchburg and Lynn, Massachusetts; Bangor, Maine; and Schenectady, New York. Within these organizations, Navy experts will apply their experience, and use some of the world’s most modern equipment, to create a state-of-the-art propulsion system that is versatile, quiet and highly efficient. We wish to thank the Navy for entrusting this vital program to GE.
A Proud Tradition
The heritage Edison began with the first shipboard power generation system continues at Naval & Drive Turbine Systems. Today, GE powers the Navy fleet from large aircraft carriers and submarines to small auxiliary ships. Tomorrow, electric drive will broaden the Navy’s capability in the Twenty-first Century and enable us to carry-on our primary mission... to maintain leadership in propulsion and ships service systems for the U.S. Navy.

SCIENCE SCOPE
A torpedo’s guidance and control subsystem directs the torpedo to the target to successfully complete search, homing, and attack missions. The Mk-48 Advanced Capability (ADCAP) torpedo, designed and built by Hughes Aircraft Company, initially receives its attack information from the submarine’s fire control system. After launch, a long, thin communications wire between the torpedo and submarine serves as a real-time relay for changes in the torpedo’s attack functions. Should the torpedo lose sonar contact with its target, its own tactical data processor returns to the search mode to relocate the target.
If the target is able to initially evade the weapon, the ADCAP torpedo will re-enter and maintain an attack mode until interception.
Hughes was the recipient of the U.S. Army Award for outstanding achievements in Value Engineering for cost-savings. In 1987, Hughes Value Engineering Change Proposals (VECPs) saved customers over 53 million dollars. Since 1964, 735 Hughes VECPs on 53 programs have resulted in a total savings of 1.136 billion dollars. Some of the programs benefitting from the VECPs include F/A-18 avionics, Maverick, Phoenix, and Advanced Medium Range Air-to-Air Missiles, M1 Abrams Tank, Bradley Fighting Vehicle, and the AN/UYQ-21.
A pioneering project for the long distance transport of unprocessed gas will drive the gas through a pipeline for injection into a reservoir 30 miles away. Norsk Hydro’s Troll-Oseberg Gas Injection (TOGI) project, in the Norwegian North Sea, is utilizing two-phase gas/liquid pipeline flow, diverless installation and maintenance, and remote control of the module from the Oseberg A platform over a greater distance than ever attempted before. Hughes is providing subsea electronics for the sophisticated controls system, as well as multiplexed electro-hydraulic controls using major electronics and control pod techniques developed in conjunction with Vetco Gray. The project is scheduled for completion in late 1989.
An anti-tank missile that attacks tanks where they are the most vulnerable is being developed by Hughes for the U.S. Army and Marines. The missile will be the latest member of the Tube-launched, Optically tracked, Wire-guided (TOW) family of weapons. Called the TOW 2B, it will assault tanks from the top, where they are less heavily armored. The TOW 2B will feature a dual-mode sensor that will trigger two warheads to shoot down at the proper time. The first production deliveries are expected in the early 1990’s.
Thin film coatings—each only ten-millionths of an inch thick—safeguard advanced surveillance and weapon systems from adverse weather environments and laser damage. Uniform films of solid material, designed for specific purposes, are applied by Hughes to optics and other components by controlling conditions within one of 25 vacuum coating chambers. These chambers range in size up to 42-inches in diameter. The complex coatings are becoming increasingly important as a means to ensure that detectors, optics, and other critical components of systems from the infrared-guided Maverick missile to the M-l tank to remote sensing satellites are able to operate effectively under combat conditions.

DROP IN ANYTIME.
The oceans are alive with potentially hostile submarines. Silent, stealthy, deep, they wait patiently for the order to do us harm.
For more than 20 years Sanders has been listening to the ocean and understanding its secrets. Our ASW systems, both active and passive, give submarines no rest, no matter how silently they run, or how deep they dive.
Unique flextensional transducers make
Sander’s low-frequency, active sonar systems particularly unwelcome to enemy submarine captains. Both effective and economical, they are just one example of our commitment to staying on top of the threat and yet under budget.
No matter what kind of hostile submarines are in the neighborhood, we help make sure they don’t drop in unannounced.

You might be surprised by the theaters we play now.
You might be surprised that Royal Ordnance serves every theater of military operations.
In the air. On land. And at sea.
And you might be surprised that we design and manufacture a complete range of weapon systems and sub-systems; as well as the reliable munitions which made our reputation.
But our customers aren’t surprised. Since Shakespeare’s at the Globe Theatre, Royal Ordnance products have been in action in every mqjor event of Britain’s military history.
Today, we are involved in everything from Air Force ground attack weapons and air-combat missiles to infantry weapons, artillery systems, specialist combat vehicles, naval missile systems, torpedo warheads, and mines.
We’re using this comprehensive experience in cooperation with American companies to meet the demanding requirements of the U.S. Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines.
Currently, we are working on programs as diverse as insensitive munitions, low signature and liquid propellants, mine clearing line charges, intercom systems, future mortar systems and their ammunition, low recoil force guns, reactive armors, and lightweight howitzer developments.
After 400 years, Royal Ordnance still plays the Globe. All of it. Thanks to partnerships bom in tradition and designed for excellence.

NIGHT STALKER
MCDONNELL DOUGLA&
AV-8B.THE MEAN MACHINE.
Flying from an amphibious ship or from almost any place on land, the AV-8B can now provide round-the-clock protection for ground troops.
At the heart of this new capability is a forward-looking infrared sensor that gives the pilot a sharp, wide-angle video image of the terrain ahead. This allows him to locate and strike at night—
with daylight accuracy.
Night vision goggles enable the pilot to fly at low altitude to the target areas. A digital color map display of the target area helps guide the pilot for night attack.
Exceptional agility range, and handling characteristics make the AV-8B effective for fleet defense, surface attack, air-to-air combat
and surveillance missions as wel as close air support.
With its V/STOL capability the AV-8B has already redefined the air base. Now it’s resetting battlefield clocks. Day or night,, pinned-down riflemen get the atf support they need. Fast. ,
The AV-8B. “B” as in Big. Bad- And Better.
