Sydney Smith (1771-1845)
A Sailor braves an obviously frigid sea on the bow of the USS Glacier (AGB-4) as the ice breaker pounds her way through heavy swells in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, on 9 February 1956. The ship, commissioned the previous 27 May, was on her shakedown cruise and maiden voyage, which coincided with her participation in Operation Deep Freeze I.
