where science gets down to business
Science Teacher Fred Holtzclaw Has Successfully Created Energy In A Classroom.
In the nearly 20 years that Mr. Holtzclaw has been teaching high school science in Tennessee, he’s learned a lot about energy. How to impart enthusiasm, for instance. The hard work needed to overcome inertia. And most difficult of all, what to do about burn-out.
He’s not alone. Every day, teachers all over the country face the same challenges.
That’s why Martin Marietta is helping to underwrite a new regional Academy for Teachers of Science and Math at the University of Tennessee. It’s an intensive program of study and discussion for Martin Marietta Fellows; outstanding educators in all grade levels. Through the Academy, the private sector, government and academia are all joining together to support a critical educational initiative by President Bush.

It’s important to help keep things moving in the classroom, and teachers like Fred Holtzclaw are the right place to start. If we want to fire-up the masterminds of tomorrow, the best thing we can do is keep our outstanding teachers energized today.

Every small ship needs a powerful SideK1'
Destroyers, frigates, and corvettes often operate outside a fleet’s active ECM protection net. If they come under anti-ship missile attack, they must rely on their own chaff, gun, and missile systems for protection. They carry no active ECM system to confuse and deflect such threats.
That problem has been solved by Raytheon. Today, the USS Reid and USS Hawes, both frigates, have a lightweight active ECM system nicknamed Sidekick. It gives a small ship’s passive SLQ-32(V)2 electronic warfare system the active capability needed to support all
ocean operations. |0v

USNS MAURY MAPS THE OCEAN FLOOR
USNS MAURY, constructed by Bethlehem Steel Corporation, is the largest, fastest and first new oceanographic ship in 17 years. She became part of the MSC fleet in March 1989. MAURY is 499.8 ft in length, 72 ft in beam, and is powered by two 12,500 horsepower diesel engines which enable her to operate at a sustained speed of 20 knots.
MAURY's main mission is to conduct ocean surveys and collect essential bathymetric, gravity geomagnetic and other scientific data, Her sonar system is the Sonar Array Sounding System, a multi-beam "wide angle" precision sonar system that permits continuous charting of a broad strip of ocean floor.
MAURY ushers in a new era in ocean surveying collecting data to provide today s operating forces with vital oceanographic support. MAURY is crewed by 56 Militaiy Sealift Command Civil Service Mariners. Facilities for her crew include: single staterooms for officers and two-person staterooms for unlicensed crewmembers, four lounges, an exercise room, and a barber shop. MSC has challenging shipboard employment opportunities and invites interested individuals to request application information.

German Warships, 1815-1945 Volume One: Major Surface Vessels
By Eric Groener, revised and expanded by Dieter lung and Martin Maas Years in the making, this translation of the first volume of Eric Groener's monumental study of German warships will be welcomed by all ship enthusiasts. Long acknowledged as the most detailed and authoritative reference ever written on the subject, the multi-volume work provides data on ship design, construction, dimensions, machines, armament, and comments on such abstract factors as performance, seakeeping, and service history, for approximately 10,000 ships and craft.
The illustrations, which have been the subject of almost as much original research as the text, consist entirely of constant-scale line drawings of every ship for which sufficient information is available, often including deck views as well as sheer plans and where necessary, significant modifications.
The first of three volumes to be offered in English, this volume deals with all major surface warships, including minesweepers, S-boats, merchant cruisers, raiders, and all forms of auxiliary mine warfare ships and netlayers. 288 pages/929 line drawings/ISBN: 0-87021-790-9

When the fight’s on, and a pilot finds himself in a high threat environment, the AN/ALQ-126B can mean the difference for survival. This Lockheed Sanders electronic countermeasures system is a combat-tested veteran, now protecting U.S. and allied fighter and attack aircraft.
Sanders is the world’s largest producer of on-board ECM systems. The 126B is battle- proven and in serial production, with more than 1,000 units delivered to the U.S. Navy, Marines and a number of allied air forces.
Combined with either the AN/ALQ-162 or an off-board decoy system, the 126B assures a full range of protection from radar-
F-16. The technology is modern and an extensive logistics infrastructure is in place. Performance, reliability, and maintainability all meet or exceed design parameters. Above all, the 126B is affordable.
Sanders is currently integrating advanced gallium-arsenide circuitry into the 126B so it will outpace the evolving threat, making sure tactical aircraft can meet the challenge — present and future.
success and safety depends on your packaging and ACLAR® Fluoropolymer Film
Every packager of moisture-sensitive electronics, military,
--communications, and aerospace co/nponents knows.......
ACLAR fluoropolymer film from Allied-Signal as the ultimate flexible, transparent, moisture barrier.
But beyond ACLAR’s barrier properties are other characteristics vital to the safe and successful fulfillment of difficult missions.
- Flame Retardency. ACLAR receives excellent ratings in flame spread and vertical burn, tests conducted by UL, NASA, and FAA test procedures, by not supporting combustion.
- Low Outgassing. ACLAR /neets deep space requirements of non-contamination of critical components due to outgassing.
- LOX Compatibility. ACLAR meets all NASA requirements for liquid oxygen (LOX) compatibility as well as for other hypergols.
- Chemically Inert. ACLAR will not react with most
chemicals.
- ToughnessTACLAR has suff icient strength and
durability as an unsupported film for many packaging applications. \
- Processed Enhancements. In addition to ACLAR's inherent properties, other performance benefits derive from advanced processing—
Static Dissipative. Treated ACLAR satisfies NASA requirements for electrostatic discharge.
Ultra-Clean. When ultra-cleanliness is required,
ACLAR can be processed to meet your most stringent specifications.
Laminations. ACLAR can be laminated to other materials to meet all requirements of MIL Spec 22191 Type 1 for transparent high moisture barrier military packaging.
For more information and technical data about ACLAR fluoropolymer film, contact your Allied-Signal Performance Film Specialist today.
