This html article is produced from an uncorrected text file through optical character recognition. Prior to 1940 articles all text has been corrected, but from 1940 to the present most still remain uncorrected. Artifacts of the scans are misspellings, out-of-context footnotes and sidebars, and other inconsistencies. Adjacent to each text file is a PDF of the article, which accurately and fully conveys the content as it appeared in the issue. The uncorrected text files have been included to enhance the searchability of our content, on our site and in search engines, for our membership, the research community and media organizations. We are working now to provide clean text files for the entire collection.
A Special Reminiscence
It was the finest kind of reminiscence, afternoon tea with Katrina Sigsbee Fischer in that handsome and charming country house where her distinguished father had spent much of his creative life. In his nearby studio, far from the sea, he had fashioned some of the greatest works of this century, drawing on an astounding memory and bringing to graphic life shipboard events of years recent and long past.
“My father always had his studio at home,” Miss Fischer explained, “and spelled his work with forays into the vegetable garden or an interlude with Beethoven at the piano.” “There was no ‘bunkum’,” she continued, “and personal integrity was a keynote. His versatility was enormous, and he usually excelled at whatever he was doing.”
Miss Fischer also spoke of “competition” as it “made him rise to super heights, perhaps because of a childhood when he had nothing to fall back on but his own capabilities.”
“Home is the sailor, home from the sea.” Anton Otto Fischer works in his Woodstock, New York, studio on illustrations for an author and book that were worthy of his gifts, Herman Melville’s Moby Dick.
