Honors the Crew

This is a unique rendition of a sailing ship. While most portray the hull and every mast and yard, Mr. Freeman has chosen to highlight the hull in such detail that you can actually see the heart of any sailing ship, the crew. And it is this portrait of the crew that drew me to purchase this print of the U.S. Coast Guard Barque "Eagle", to remind me always of my short time on the Eagle with her crew - what an amazing combination. As a West Point cadet, I spent two weeks of my precious summer leave in August of 1969 on the Eagle. We were to go to Bermuda. Instead we ran in to the hurricane "Blanche" and spent a few days sailing in hurricane winds with minimum sail. For someone who had read every Hornblower book many times, that was a magic time - on the deck of a sailing ship in high winds and heavy seas. Luckily, we ended up with only minor damage to the main mast back stays. This forced us to motored back to Montauk Point, fixed the damage and spent the remainder of the voyage sailing east and then west back to New London. I highly recommend this to anyone with a love of sailing ships and the crews that man them. Great memories return every time I pass by this print...
