Full Description:

Bestselling author Victor Suvorov probes newly released Soviet documents and reevaluates existing material to analyze Stalin's strategic design to conquer Europe and the reasons behind his controversial support for Nazi Germany. A former Soviet army intelligence officer, the author explains that Stalin's strategy leading up to World War II grew from Vladimir Lenin's belief that if World War I did not ignite the worldwide Communist revolution, then a second world war would be needed to achieve it. Stalin saw Nazi Germany as the power that would fight and weaken capitalist countries so that Soviet armies could then sweep across Europe. Suvorov reveals how Stalin conspired with German leaders to bypass the Versailles Treaty, which forbade German rearmament, and secretly trained German engineers and officers and provided bases and factories for war. He also calls attention to the 1939 nonaggression pact between the Soviet Union and Germany that allowed Hitler to proceed with his plans to invade Poland, fomenting war in Europe.

Suvorov debunks the theory that Stalin was duped by Hitler and that the Soviet Union was a victim of Nazi aggression. Instead, he makes the case that Stalin neither feared Hitler nor mistakenly trusted him. Suvorov maintains that after Germany occupied Poland, defeated France, and started to prepare for an invasion of Great Britain, Hitler's intelligence services detected the Soviet Union's preparations for a major war against Germany. This detection, he argues, led to Germany's preemptive war plan and the launch of an invasion of the USSR. Stalin emerges from the pages of this book as a diabolical genius consumed by visions of a worldwide Communist revolution at any cost—a leader who wooed Hitler and Germany in his own effort to conquer the world. In contradicting traditional theories about Soviet planning, the book is certain to provoke debate among historians throughout the world.

Viktor Suvorov is the author of eighteen books that have been translated into more than twenty languages, including Inside the Aquarium: The Making of a Top Soviet Spy and Icebreaker: Who Started the Second World War? A Soviet army officer who served in military intelligence, he defected in 1978 to the United Kingdom, where he worked as an intelligence analyst and lecturer. He lives in England.

Praise for The Chief Culprit

“A provocative study…compelling...A highly controversial study, Suvorov’s book is nevertheless well researched and warrants further examination into this critical period in the history of the war.”

The entire Suvorov paradigm summed up in 280 pages
Wednesday, December 31, 2008
By: andrzej m. zelazniewicz
I have read almost all of Suvorov's books in Polish. It is difficult and expensive to get the English translations. Moreover, the previous titles were written in an ironic and non-academic style that was suitable for eastern European readers but frightened western scholars. This time Suvorov provides a cool r?sum? of a dozen of his books concentrated in less than 300 pages that are divided into 44 topics. The author proposes a (the first?) coherent interpretation of WWII facts that seem at first contradictory, paradoxical or just incomprehensible. He gives well argumented answers to the main unanswered questions about WWII. For instance, why did Stalin refuse to believe that Hitler was about to strike? Why did Stalin order German communists to ally with the Nazis against the German social-democrats? Etc. To me Suvorov's paradigm shift in WWII historiography is so far reaching that I would call it a "r?volution copernicienne" as the French put it. Even if he was wrong he would deserve a Nobel Prize for such an attempt. The moral implications are ground shaking; Hitler indeed defended Europe against Communism and Churchill and Roosevelt don't look as tough, as nice and as smart anymore. All of this is NOT politically correct and will be hard to accept for many years to come. Of course, Suvorov is absolutely anti-totalitarian and his work is a deeply humanistic and uncompromising deconstruction of both totalitarian Nazism and communism. Are professional historians ready to stop laughing at Suvorov? Are they capable of questioning their own teachings? Are they capable of admitting they were wrong? That they were duped? Time will tell. All I can tell is that it is hard to come back to conventional wisdom about WWII once you've read this book.

Amazing tale of WWII's other aggressor

"The Chief Culprit," by Victor Suvorov, exposes Josef Stalin's massive plot to conquer Europe under the auspices of `liberating' it from Nazi Germany. Suvorov details the political strategy; industrial preparations; and the military advances of the Soviet Union to put this plot into action. With all the facts laid out, it is obvious that Stalin was a master gamesman where he was able to goad his adversaries into actions that would benefit the Soviet Union, and squarely place the blame on the initial aggressor. After completing the book, you will be convinced that Stalin was as responsible as Hitler for starting World War II. Although the writing style is sometimes a bit brusk, it is still an amazing book!!
