Full Description:

Drawing on colorful literary and historical references, this narrative guide to the U.S. Naval Academy grounds—known as the Yard—takes visitors on a prescribed path within the walls of a great Annapolis institution that has been educating midshipmen for more than 150 years. Visitors can move at their own pace as they immerse themselves in the Academy's culture, as described here, and linger over what appeals to them most, be it John Paul Jones' crypt, a collection of Currier and Ives prints at the Naval Academy Museum, or antique cannons from the Spanish-American War.

The authors offer telling quotes from famous graduates, anecdotes about events that took place in various buildings, facts about the architecture, and simple instructions about the best place to stand to compare a modern-day view with a historic photograph

Taylor Baldwin Kiland, vice president of marketing and communications at the United States Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C., is a former naval officer and the third generation in her family to serve. Jamie Howren is a portrait and landscape photographer in Orange County, California. They are also the creators and authors of the exhibit and book Open Doors: Vietnam POWs Thirty Years Later.

"This year the Naval Institute Press has produced a fine booklet allowing you to walk the grounds on your own, taking as much or as little time as you?d like to explore the Annapolis, Md., site. The author, Taylor Baldwin-Kiland, is a former naval officer and in charge of marketing the Navy Memorial in Washington, D.C. She is joined by professional photographer Jamie Howren. Together they bring to life the Naval Academy and its architecture, the acres of gardens each uncovering a monument and memorial to Navy and Marine Corps. Check out this new book and use it to plan an experience for family, friends and colleagues who wish to join you on a historic walking tour of the U.S. Naval Academy. If you are visiting Washington D.C., the U.S. Naval Academy is only an hour?s drive away. You can create your own tour using this new book."
