Capt. Wise

Naval Institute Press 2008 Author of the Year - 3rd Prize

The authors have compiled this stirring collection of profiles in courage to honor the Sailors and Marines awarded the Silver Star by the U.S. Navy while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. It documents the extraordinary, award-winning actions of young American men in the war against global terrorism. A companion volume to The Navy Cross (Naval Institute Press, 2007), this book also includes selected profiles of Silver Star recipients from previous wars whose stories stand out as the best among an elite group. It is the first book to recognize and preserve for future generations the selfless dedication shown by Silver Star medalists in their fight for freedom.

James E. Wise Jr., a former naval aviator, intelligence officer, and Vietnam veteran, retired from the U.S. Navy as a captain. His books include Stars in Blue and U-505, among many others. He lives in the Washington, D.C., area.

Scott Baron, a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War and former law enforcement officer in California, is the coauthor, with Wise, of The Navy Cross and Women at War.

Reviews:

"I strongly recommend this highly readable, stirring account to any and all in our reading audience."

- Cdr. Peter B. Mersky, USNR (Ret.), Naval Aviation News

James E. Wise, Jr., Captain, U.S. Navy (Ret.) became a naval aviator after graduation from Northwestern University in 1953. He served as ship's Intelligence Officer onboard the aircraft carrier USS America (CVA-66) during the 1967 Six Day War between Israel and its Arab neighbors--and later in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War. He subsequently commanded various naval intelligence units. Since retirement from the Navy, Captain Wise has held several senior executive posts in private sector companies. Known for his strong ties to actors in Hollywood, Mr. Wise has written and co-authored more than a dozen books, many of them featuring stories of movie actors who served in the armed forces. They include the Naval Institute Press titles Stars in Blue, Stars in the Corps, and International Stars at War.
