Full Description:

This classic study tracks the development of the modern U.S. Navy from its first steel ships to its emergence as a mature fighting force known as the Great White Fleet. First published in 1972, the book continues to be in demand because of its outstanding photographic coverage of the ships and men of the early modern Navy and the author's thorough coverage of the Navy's transition from wood and sail to steel and steam.

John D. Alden, a retired U.S. Navy commander and World War II veteran, has written five books and numerous articles for the U.S. Naval Institute.

I have a 1989 printing of this book, and it is one of the favorites on my bookshelf. The coverage of our navy during the 1883-1909 period is unsurpassed. And the book just doesn't cover the ships: the policies that affected naval doctrine and the way of life of the men who served are also well documented. I cannot recommend this book too highly.
