Full Description:

Wise and Baron relate the compelling war experiences of thirty American female soldiers in the war zones of Iraq and Afghanistan, highlighting their extraordinary display of dedication to their mission and to the soldiers and sailors with whom they served. While the book's focus is on today's women in combat, it also reaches back to Korea, Vietnam and World War II to offer stories of inspiring women who served at the "cusp of the spear" as they fought and died for their country.

James E. Wise Jr. and Scott Baron are both Vietnam veterans, and co-authors of The 14-Hour War, Dangerous Games, The Silver Star, and The Navy Cross.

From the Preface

“Women at War: Iraq, Afghanistan, and Other Conflicts will give the reader a new and perhaps underreported perspective of just how valiantly women have served in the global war on terror. As in past wars, American women serving in uniform or as members of such civilian agencies as the American Red Cross, Catholic Relief Services, the Central Intelligence Agency, the U.S. Agency for International Development, among others, have proven to be vital to America’s war efforts. The voices of these women deserve to be heard.”

James E. Wise, Jr., Captain, U.S. Navy (Ret.) became a naval aviator after graduation from Northwestern University in 1953. He served as ship's Intelligence Officer onboard the aircraft carrier USS America (CVA-66) during the 1967 Six Day War between Israel and its Arab neighbors--and later in the Gulf of Tonkin during the Vietnam War. He subsequently commanded various naval intelligence units. Since retirement from the Navy, Captain Wise has held several senior executive posts in private sector companies. Known for his strong ties to actors in Hollywood, Mr. Wise has written and co-authored more than a dozen books, many of them featuring stories of movie actors who served in the armed forces. They include the Naval Institute Press titles Stars in Blue, Stars in the Corps, and International Stars at War.
