Full Description:

This heavily illustrated work is the only book to describe the entire history of the U.S. Marine Corps' air arm.  With hundreds of rare photographs, this fourth edition represents a major redesign and update of the last edition, published more than a decade ago.  Chapters include descriptions of early development and training, as well as combat deployments during World War I and in Central America.  World War II and Korea, Vietnam, the Balkans, and Southwest Asia campaigns are also well covered.  The text includes first-person accounts and comments from many participants—aviators and crewmen alike.

Peter B. Mersky, a retired commander in the U.S. Navy Reserve, was a longtime editor of Approach magazine.  A resident of Alexandria, VA, he has written more than a dozen books, including The Naval Air War in Vietnam.

Praise for U.S. Marine Corps Aviation Since 1912

“. . . .Well-researched text, the photographs add a fascinating human dimension to the story, many of them showing Marines in forward operating bases or on carrier flight decks standing next to their aircraft, thereby allowing the reader a glimpse of what it must have been like to be there and to see what many of the characters mentioned looked like. . . . [Mersky] writes in a style which is easy to read and informative, quoting facts and figures that add to the interest rather than detracting from it. . . .This is a title that does full justice to its subject, and it is highly recommended as the standard work on the history of aviation in the U.S. Marine Corps.” Warship 2011, “Naval Books of the Year”

"This history is not just for former, current, or wanna-be Marine aviators.  It is for anyone with curiosity about things militaire for aficionados. Its for libraries, public, private, and military. I expect to return to my copy repeatedly and have already nosed in it with satisfaction on several occasions. It sits next to my Burrows photographic coverage of 'Nam. I like the book because it is a single-source, reasonably thorough document; it is well illustrated, clearly written; and because it includes quotes, comments, and asides from and about the Marines who flew the aircraft. It is truly about Marine aviation, not just the aircraft." — The Washington Times, December 11, 2009
