Far from the dense jungles and brutal fighting on Guadalcanal, Platoon Sergeant John Basilone sat down on 1 September 1943 for an interview with a Marine public relations captain in Washington, D.C. The following is a transcript of their conversation in which Basilone recounts his actions during the Battle of Henderson Field that earned him the Medal of Honor [3] . The transcript is at the National Archives, College Park, Maryland.
