Tom Hayward was born in Southern California, graduating from high school a month before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He enrolled in two local colleges and was appointed an aviation cadet in the V-5 Program prior to entering the Naval Academy in 1944.
Following accelerated graduation in 1947, Ensign Hayward entered flight training. He later flew combat missions in Korea and Vietnam, and served as a test pilot. He commanded the attack carrier USS America (CVA-66) in the early 1970s.
In the mid-1970s, his major commands included the U.S. Seventh and Pacific Fleets. Admiral Hayward served as Chief of Naval Operations from 1978 until 1982. Since retiring from the Navy he has been a member of several corporate and nonprofit boards and is co-founder and vice chairman of Voyager Expanded Learning, an educational services company.
Donations are needed to underwrite the costs of footnoting, indexing, and binding Admiral Hayward's oral history. Tax-deductible contributions of all sizes are appreciated. Those who donate $1,000 or more to the Hayward history will be acknowledged in the bound volume, in Proceedings , and at the Institute's Web site [6] .
