USNI Histories Receive Welcome Support

Future generations have much to learn from the life experiences of Medal of Honor recipient Rear Admiral Eugene B. Fluckey, nicknamed the "Galloping Ghost of the China Coast,” and the most decorated submariner in U.S. Navy history. Through the assistance of longtime member Everett P. Weaver of Winnetka, Illinois, and the generosity of the Paul Bechtner Foundation, the Naval Institute Press has commissioned award-winning author Carl LaVO to pen a biography of Admiral Fluckey that should be completed in 2006.

Everett “Tuck” Weaver, who served under Gene Fluckey in the USS Barb (SS-220) during World War II, is a 1940 graduate of the University of Illinois. He later served as Chairman and Director of Amcol International.

In addition to underwriting the Fluckey biography, the Paul Bechtner Foundation is also assisting the Naval Institute Press to publish Paul Stillwell's upcoming book Submarine Stories, and has provided generous support to the Institute's oral history program.

A critical component of the Naval Institute's educational and outreach mission is to maintain its archives of nearly half a million images—the largest private collection of naval photography in the world. To provide widespread access to the collection and to produce high-quality prints at a reasonable cost, the photo library staff requests your assistance to secure the following items and services:
