Now in its second edition, Leadership Embodied is an inspiring collection of short biographical essays focusing on Navy and Marine Corps leaders who have achieved notable accomplishments by employing certain characteristics, traits, and virtues. While leaders are present in nearly every human undertaking, leadership in this work is illustrated through the most dramatic and demanding of all endeavors—war and the preparations for war. Wartime challenges are more monumental and exacting because of their life and death nature. All of these individuals have been selected because their case studies demonstrate the very essence of leadership through their dramatic shaping of today’s institutions, practices, and customs within the naval services. Their contributions should be required reading for any student of leadership. Each has a particular lesson for midshipmen on their journey to becoming U.S. Navy or Marine Corps officers.
