The Naval Institute Foundation needs contributions to fund the completion of the late Vice Admiral Bernard B. "Beetle" Forbes Jr.'s oral history. Admiral Forbes was noted for his colorful, often amusing stories, and he had plenty to talk about in a career that included service as an enlisted man on board the USS Yorktown (CV-5) before World War II. He served in the destroyer USS Barton (DD-722) during the war and then took flight training. He had several tours of duty as an AD Skyraider pilot, including squadron command.
Admiral Forbes' memoir contains a great many personal vignettes on two four-star admirals with whom he had lengthy association: Felix R. Stump, who commanded the Second and Pacific fleets, and Isaac C. "Ike" Kidd Jr., who commanded the Sixth and Atlantic fleets. The admiral's oral history documents his service ashore in the Bureau of Personnel, his tour as skipper of the carrier Independence (CVA-62), and also his time as Commander, Carrier Division Six. Admiral Forbes retired in March 1977 and died in June 2002.

On 7 December 2006 we will observe the 65th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, an event increasingly few of us can recall first-hand. The Naval Institute needs your help to preserve tens of thousands of World War II photographs—including many rare color images not available from any other source—so that the service and sacrifices of WWII veterans will be visually documented for generations to come.
In total, the Naval Institute Photo Archive [8] contains nearly half a million images. These photos are fading with each passing year.
