Naval Institute Thanks Its Own at Honors Dinner
A distinguished group of supporters was on hand for the Naval Institute's first annual Honors Dinner in mid-October. In addition to recognizing various authors, the Institute thanked long-time member and author Edward S. Miller for his outstanding ongoing support.
The Proceedings Authors of the Year are frequent contributors Art Pine and David J. Danelo. (Mary Danelo accepted on her husband's behalf because he is on assignment in Iraq.) Captain Andrew C. A. Jampoler received the annual award for his work in Naval History . A Lifetime Achievement Award for author Brigadier General Edwin H. Simmons was accepted by Clark Simmons in his father's absence.
Co-authors James W. Parkinson and Lee Benson are the Naval Institute Press Authors of the Year for Soldier Slaves: Abandoned by the White House, Courts, and Congress .
The Institute also premiered its new television series Americans at War [8] . Filmed in HD, these 90-second interstitials will premiere on PBS in the spring of 2007. The series contains incredibly moving videotaped vignettes of notable Sea Service veterans describing momentous episodes in their careers. The first two in this series feature former Chief of Naval Operations retired Admiral James L. Holloway III recalling duty as a gunnery officer in the USS Bennion (DD-662) during the Battle of Surigao Strait in World War II and retired Marine Colonel John W. Ripley on his destruction of the bridge at Dong Ha, critical to stopping the April 1972 North Vietnamese Easter Offensive.
Also at the dinner, Naval Institute member and retired Navy Captain Paul X. Rinn, former commanding officer of the USS Samuel B. Roberts (FFG-58), delivered the keynote address. He enthralled the audience by recounting the events of April 1988 when he and his crew saved the frigate after it was severely damaged by an Iranian mine in the Persian Gulf. Their story is the subject of the recent Naval Institute Press book, No Higher Honor [9] , by Bradley Peniston.
