The U.S. Naval Institute encourages comments on articles, blog posts, and anywhere else we have enabled this form of feedback. We do maintain certain standards for commenting in order to maintain a quality discussion.
The U.S. Naval Institue staff applies as little comment moderation as possible within the bounds of our standards, to ensure open conversation. We have strict guidelines for moderating comments that we adhere to. The following things will cause the comment system to place a comment in the moderation queue:
- Links to other web sites
- Media attachments such as images
The following things will cause a comment moderator to move a published comment into moderation:
- Personal attacks
- Malicious intent
- Illegal material
Additionally, other commenters can notify moderators of a comment they feel require moderation by flagging the comment. Once a comment has been flagged, it must be reviewed by moderators before it can be displayed. If moderators feel the comment does violate our standards, they have the right to remove it. In order for it to be removed, it must explicitly violate the standards. Differing viewpoints will not be penalized, and are in fact encouraged.
