Artist's Proof.  On February 20, 1815 two British men of war, a light frigate of 34 guns and a corvette of 22 guns set their sights for a heavy American frigate. The first shot was fired at sunset and within an hour the British ship H.M.S. Cyane surrendered and after a nearly two-hour pursuit the H.M.S. Levant followed suit. The heavy American frigate was the famed U.S.S. Constitution, "Old Ironsides," with three victories and no defeats to her credit.

outstanding painting!

The USS Constitution is a sentimental favorite ship of mine because in my life I have been most proud of practicing law in Georgia and being a Navy Officer and this ship encompasses both professions. A unique and radical design, the Constitution was designed to outfight anything she could not outrun and outrun anything she could not outfight. The large (for its time) drydock where she was built also had an interesting history. Her first ship was the Constitution and her last ship was a 1950s guided missile destroyer escort - quite a range of technologies! This is my favorite painting of the Constitution for many reasons. It captures the beauty and changeability and swells of the ocean, has the flag flying in the proper direction for a sailing vessel, uses light very well, captures the beauty of dusk on the open ocean, and - more than any other painting I have ever seen - captures what I believe an early naval battle must have been like. For years it hung above my fireplace and looked good in bright or dim light. When I moved I donated it to the Sacramento, California Reserve Center. I believe you will be quite happy with this print.
