[SI The Battle of the Java Sea
F. C. van Oosten. Annapolis, Md.: Naval Institute Press, 1976. 128 pp. Maps, lllus.
Append. Bib. $5.95 (14.75).
Viewing the carnage on the field of Waterloo, the Duke of Wellington is alleged to have remarked that the only thing more melancholy than a battle lost is a battle
won. It might also be said that the only thing more affecting than a battle won is a battle lost. The gallant last stand of the American-Dutch-British-Australian fleet at the battle of the Java Sea, 27 February 1942, is a case in point. The author has exploited previously neglected Dutch records as well as American, British, and Japanese sources to compile what could become and remain the definitive history of the action. This is the fifteenth volume of the Naval Institute's “Sea Battles in Close-Up” series.

Contrary to the impression given by its title, this pictorial does not deal solely with the battle of Jutland. Although the bulk of the book is devoted to the engagement, the opening third traces the history of Anglo-German naval rivalry and reviews the prior course of the naval war.

The Penobscot Expedition of 1779 was the largest amphibious operation undertaken by American forces during the War of the Revolution. Due to the incompetence of its naval commander, Commodore Dudley Saltonstall, it ended in unmitigated disaster. This well-researched documentary history provides the most detailed account 0 the operation to appear to date.

Seldom in the history of military technology has a weapon system as promising as the cruise missile proved so controversial. Following an outline of the evolution of the cruise missile, the authors argue that it should not be regarded as a diplomatic bargaining chip, but as a vitally important addition to the American strategic arsenal at a crucial phase of East-West relations. Dr. Pfaltzgraff is Associate Professor of International Politics at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, and Director of the Institute for Foreign Policy Analysis, at which Ms. Davis is a research associate.

In this brilliant study, he traces the changing nature of battle, as experienced by its participants, from the later Middle Ages to the present day. Despite distinguished service as commander of the American Expeditionary Force in France in World War I, General John J. Pershing is largely a forgotten figure. The thesis of this popular biography is that he was, in both his virtues and his limitations, the epitome of this country’s military traditions—the classic American soldier. The title is taken from the nursery rhyme, "What are soldiers made of?
Pipe clay and drill,
All kinds of skill
That’s what soldiers are made of.”
