Marine Corps

Joseph Alexander Colonel, U. S. Marine Corps (Ret.) served 28 years of active duty as a Marine Corps assault amphibian officer, including two combat tours in Vietnam and five years at sea. He commanded a company in Vietnam, and a battalion in Okinawa, then went on to serve as chief of staff of the Third Marine Division; Director, Marine Corps Research and Development Center; and Military Secretary to the Commandant of the Marine Corps. He retired in 1988. His higher education includes studies at Georgetown University and the Naval War College. His most recent Naval Institute Press book is Through the Wheat: The U.S. Marines in World War I.

 

 

 

 

Dr. Charles P. Neimeyer Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Marine Corps (Ret.) is currently the Director and Chief of Marine Corps History at Marine Corps University, Quantico, Virginia. Prior to taking this post in December 2006, Dr. Neimeyer was Dean of Academics at Forrest Sherman Chair of Public Diplomacy at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island. From 1997-2002,he worked as a full-time professor of National Security Affairs at the institution. Serving at a variety of posts and stations during his 20-year Marine Corps career, his military duties included service in three Marine Divisions. While on active duty he earned masters and doctoral degrees in history (with distinction) from Georgetown University – and an additional masters degree from the Naval War College, where he graduated with highest honors. Dr. Neimeyer edited the book USMC Wisdom from the Pages of Leatherneck, Marine Corps Gazette, and Proceedings, published by the Naval Institute Press.

Jack Sweetman is a historian and the author, co-author, translator, editor or co-editor of 10 books and many shorter pieces in the field of naval and military history. For many years he was consulting editor of the Naval Institute's Naval History magazine, and he is a recipient of the Alfred Thayer Mahan Award for Literary Achievement and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society. Mr. Sweetman is co-author of the Naval Institute book Leathernecks: An Illustrated History of the U.S. Marine Corps.
