In His Own Words: Gregory E. Glaros
I first became aware of the Naval Institute as a midshipman at the Naval Academy in 1982. I joined shortly after graduating and have remained a member. It is always good to have an intellectual dialogue with your peers as well as the leaders with whom you serve. This was true for me as a young naval officer and remains the case now that I run my own company. The forum itself is so important. I learn something new in almost every issue of Proceedings and gain a better understanding of the ongoing activities of the military—particularly those of the Sea Services.
I donate to the Naval Institute for very specific reasons. First, to ensure our Navy continues to have a forum—to have open and free dialogue that is both beneficial and critical. Second, so the future leaders of our Navy can participate in that dialogue and forum. And third, to ensure that the legacy of our nation’s naval history is preserved.
Money should go where words ring true. I sponsor the midshipmen of 19th Company, the graduating Naval Academy class, through an award named for the late Vice Admiral Arthur Cebrowski, and the Naval Academy Prep School for student memberships in the Naval Institute. I encourage that they not only join and become members, but that they also participate in the rich dialogue that is their heritage as well as their future.
Participating in the Naval Institute is not just for the military. It is important to introduce civilians to naval history’s great heritage and for them to participate in the dialogue of how our nation is protected both in the sea lines of communications as well as the humanitarian efforts the Navy provides in times of crisis.
