‘The best of prophets of the future is the past.’
Lord Byron (1788–1824)
A decade before his name was forever etched in U.S. Navy history, Captain George Dewey stands on the bridge of the USS Pensacola at Hampton Roads, Virginia. The 16-gun screw frigate had just returned on 1 March 1888 from a 35-month cruise in European waters. There, the flagship made 29 port visits ranging from Sweden, Denmark, and England, through the Mediterranean to Italian, Spanish, and French ports, and on to Egypt, Syria, Turkey, and Algiers.
