Three Farragut-class ships of Destroyer Squadron 1, including Monaghan (DD-354) and Dale (DD-353), emerge from a smoke screen during Fleet Problem XX held in February 1939. The large-scale exercise in the Caribbean and Atlantic, personally observed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, involved 134 ships, 600 aircraft, more than 52,000 officers and men.
