Grant Underwrites History Conference
The William M. Wood Foundation of Boston, Massachusetts, will sponsor the U.S. Naval Institute’s 2012 history conference. This year’s program, a joint production with the Naval Academy to be held in Annapolis on 16 October, is entitled “The History, Challenges, and Dynamics of Cyber Warfare.”
The late William Wood was a graduate of Harvard College and Columbia University Law School. He served in the Navy during World War II and practiced law in Massachusetts for many years.
The Naval Institute has enjoyed the foundation’s support on a number of projects over the past five years, such as special gatefold issues of Naval History magazine. The foundation also underwrote USNI’s annual history conferences in 2010 and 2011.
Matching Gifts Increase Your Support
Employer gift matching is a simple and effective way to boost your support of the Naval Institute. Many companies match or even double tax-deductible gifts made by staff, board members, and retirees to add the weight of their charitable dollars to the interests of their associates.
In recent months, the Naval Institute Foundation has received matching gifts from:
APS Financial
Bank of America
Chevron
Fannie Mae
FMC Corporation
General Electric
Jacobs Technology
Portland General Electric
Prudential
We deeply appreciate the extra steps members and donors take to set the gift matches in motion. For more information about employers that match contributions to the Naval Institute, please contact Sue Sweeney at [email protected] or (410) 295-1054.
Welcome Back, Kirk McAlexander
The Strategic Plan recently approved by the Naval Institute’s Board of Directors names four main objectives, one of which is to secure an endowment sufficient to provide a reliable revenue stream for the Institute’s future. In 2012 we will redouble our efforts to highlight the Institute for what it is: a worthy place to advance your philanthropic goals.
Toward that end, the Naval Institute Foundation has again come under the capable leadership of Kirk McAlexander, who has rejoined the staff as Executive Vice President for Development. Kirk headed the Institute’s fundraising efforts from 1999–2004, a period of unprecedented growth. He has 30 years’ experience of leadership in the field at Johns Hopkins University, the Public Broadcasting Service, the Menninger Foundation, the National Federation of Independent Business, and most recently as principal of the consulting firm McAlexander Group. He is a graduate of the University of Kansas and Johns Hopkins University.
Kirk and his wife Suzanne, an educator, are both originally from Kansas and have lived in Huntingtown, Maryland, for more than 25 years. They are the parents of Caitrin McAlexander Huntzinger of Baltimore; Noel McAlexander of Austin, Texas; and Ian McAlexander of McGaheysville, Virginia.
Kirk will travel extensively and meet with members to determine how the Naval Institute can best fulfill its mission and serve their interests. He can be reached at [email protected] and (410) 295-1056.
