A Rude Awakening

A two-year tour on a Royal Navy destroyer showed one young surface warfare officer how much he didn't know.
As the U.S. Navy makes the transition from an era of predominately blue-water operations to one of increased green- and brown-water operations, the need for professional, well-trained mariners is absolutely essential to achieve the maximum warfighting capability of our force. The war on terrorism has brought the Navy closer to the shores of the world, and as a result, the shoals of the world as well.

Lieutenant McGuffie is a 2003 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy. During his first sea tour he served as main propulsion assistant on the USS Benfold (DDG-65). He then served two years in HMS Cornwall as a bridge watchkeeper as part of the Personnel Exchange Program. He reported to the Navy's Office of Legislative Affairs in January 2008 as a Senate Liaison Officer.
