Leading Surface Warfare Officers: Straight-to-the-Fleet

The old training system was thorough, expensive, and time-consuming. The new relies on SWOs to be what they are: leaders.
Down on the waterfront each June and July, newly minted ensigns arrive at their respective quarterdecks. There is a noticeable difference between these prospective surface warriors and their peers in the aviation and submarine communities. Besides the platform and the working uniform, a much greater distinction exists: these surface line officers have reported to their ships without having common surface warfare schooling.

Lieutenant McDermott is a post-division officer SWO on his first shore tour. Following commissioning through the University of Notre Dame NROTC Unit, he served two tours in an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer as the antisubmarine warfare officer and damage-control assistant.
