Naval Institute Foundation

Few organizations can claim a breadth of history equal that of the U.S. Naval Institute: 132 years of continuous operation, 1,226 issues of our flagship publication, Proceedings, and 107 years of publishing books through the Naval Institute Press—not to mention more than 100 years of essay contests, a successful seminar program, and the gamble on an unknown local author that resulted in the Naval Institute's first novel, Tom Clancy's The Hunt for Red October .

To honor and build on this distinguished heritage, the Naval Institute proudly inaugurates a new signature donor association. The 1873 Society will be comprised of individuals who make significant annual gifts in support of the Naval Institute's mission. Their generosity will fuel future successes.

For information about membership in The 1873 Society, contact Foundation Chief Operating Officer Bill MacIntosh at (410) 295-1056, or [email protected] .

Fair Winds to Retiring Directors

We recently bid farewell to two key members of the Foundation's board. Admiral Stanley R. Arthur became Chairman of the Foundation in July 2000. Under his leadership, the Foundation consistently increased its transfer of funds to benefit Naval Institute operations. Admiral Arthur will retire as president of Lockheed Martin Missiles and Fire Control in 2005.

When Brigadier General Richard A. Behrenhausen joined the Foundation board in September 2000, he already was involved with the Naval Institute's seminar program. As president and chief executive officer of the Robert R. McCormick Tribune Foundation, he has been instrumental in establishing a partnership between the two organizations. He also will retire from the McCormick Tribune Foundation this summer.

These gentlemen leave with our profound thanks for their outstanding service.

A Salute to the Leadership Club

The Foundation's primary annual donor society, those who give $1,000 or more, has grown in number each year since its inception in 2000. We extend our appreciation to the following members of Leadership Club 2004:
