On 26 July, the Navy will commission the Arleigh Burke -class guided-missile destroyer Mustin (DDG-89) in San Diego. The new combatant is named in honor of a famous Navy family. Henry C. Mustin was a pioneer in naval aviation. His son Lloyd was a long-time surface warfare officer who retired as a vice admiral, and Lloyd's son, another Henry C., also was a surface warrior who became a vice admiral—and recently coauthored the Proceedings article " All Ahead Flank for LCS " (February, pp. 30-33). In the 1970s, Dr. John Mason, then the Naval Institute's director of oral history, did a series of 37 interviews with Lloyd Mustin, who was blessed with remarkable recall. In 2001, the transcripts of those interviews were turned over to Lloyd's nephew, author John Fass Morton. Morton used the oral history and other source materials to produce the new Naval Institute Press book, Mustin: A Naval Family of the 20th Century . Publication of this book was made possible in part by a subvention from United Defense LP. All the officers and crew of the Mustin will receive copies of the book and the August Naval History , which features an article about Lloyd Mustin by the book's author.
