The title of this special section honors Commander Dan Shanower, USN, and his fellow citizens who were killed in the attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Center on 11 September 2001. A life member of the Naval Institute and a frequent contributor to Proceedings, Commander Shanower reflected on the loss in 1987 of four squadronmates of VAQ-136 in his May 1997 article, "Freedom Isn't Free."
