On 20 February 2000, the 55th anniversary of the beginning of the Battle of Iwo Jima, James J. Bradley was the keynote speaker at the ceremony at the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, honoring the soldiers who fought in that battle. Bradley's late father, John Bradley, had been one of the men who helped raise the flag on the island's Mount Suribachi in February 1945.
