This html article is produced from an uncorrected text file through optical character recognition. Prior to 1940 articles all text has been corrected, but from 1940 to the present most still remain uncorrected. Artifacts of the scans are misspellings, out-of-context footnotes and sidebars, and other inconsistencies. Adjacent to each text file is a PDF of the article, which accurately and fully conveys the content as it appeared in the issue. The uncorrected text files have been included to enhance the searchability of our content, on our site and in search engines, for our membership, the research community and media organizations. We are working now to provide clean text files for the entire collection.

Lest We Forget. . .
Commodore Edward Preble, the famous U.S. naval officer remembered for his exploits during the Barbary wars of 1803, is the namesake for five U.S. Navy vessels. The first Preble, a sloop, was commissioned on 6 August 1813 and participated in the battle of Lake Champlain in September of that year. She continued in U.S. service until she was sold in July 1815.
The second Preble, a sloop-of-war, was commissioned in 1840 and served off the coast of Africa from 1844 until September 1845. She participated in the war with Mexico and later took part in the Union blockade of the Southern Coast. She soon shifted to Pensacola, Florida, where she acted as a guard and store ship. The Preble was destroyed by fire on 27 April 1863.
The third Preble, Torpedo Boat Destroyer 12, was commissioned on 14 December 1903. She was assigned to the Pacific Fleet and served until February 1909, when she was inactivated and placed in reserve. She shifted from active to reserve status several times until April 1917. During World War I, the Preble took part in coastal convoy duty along the mid-Atlantic seaboard. She was decommissioned on 11 July 1919.
The fourth Preble (DD-345), a destroyer, was commissioned on 19 March 1920 and spent her early years off the coast of Asia, training and visiting local ports. In
1937, she was converted to a minelayer and was reclassified as DM-20. The Preble soon transferred to Hawaii, where she was being overhauled on 7 December 1941, unable to get under way during the attack on Pearl Harbor. However, large numbers of her crew cared for the wounded, fought fires, and handled ammunition. Throughout World War II, the Preble was active laying mines throughout the Pacific theater at such places as the Marshall Islands, Leyte Gulf, and the Solomons. The Preble was decommissioned on 7 December 1945.
The fifth Preble (DLG-15, later DDG-46), originally a frigate, was commissioned on 9 May 1960 and spent her first years often assigned to search-and-rescue duty with the Seventh Fleet off Vietnam. In 1965, the Preble’s helicopter detachment participated in the first over-land rescue of a downed aviator from a sea-based helicopter in the Vietnam War. She was decommissioned in 1966, overhauled for antiair warfare, and recommissioned on 23 May 1970. In 1975 her designation was changed to guided-missile destroyer (DDG-46). The Preble underwent many modernizations, including the addition of the Naval Tactical Data System as well as Harpoon and Standard missiles. She took part in the 1991 Gulf War and was decommissioned on 15 November that year.
