Origin of flight deck ops personnel colors

I commend the magazine editors for an excellent section on Essex flight deck operations.

I was wondering, though. What is the history around the choice of colors for the different functions of flight deck personnel? Were these created during the 30's during the expanded experience with the Saratoga and Lexington?

Regards,

Pascal Stalder
