For almost 140 years, the turret from the ironclad Monitor rested 240 feet below the surface of the Atlantic Ocean. The mysteries surrounding 30-31 December 1862, the night she sank while being towed by the sidewheel steamer Rhode Island, as well as the men who served on board her, were thought to be locked forever in this cylindrical vault. Now, beginning with the turret's raising to the deck of the derrick barge Wotan, those mysteries may yet be solved.
