Inside The Wire

7 Things You Should Never Be without When Leaving the Wire

Never go to work "outside the wire" in Iraq without these essentials:

   1. A wrist-mounted GPS (the Foretrex series from Garmin is the cheapest and works fine) that displays Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) coordinates and uses WGS-84 Datum. It's always nice to look down and see your grid without having to pull anything out of a pouch/pocket – especially if you're on foot patrol. Most vehicles have their own GPS.

   2. A watch with a compass on it, either electronic or one that's added on. more

Sinking in Paper: Admin Burden Is Hurting the Fast-Attack Submarine Community

It's tough to explain to the uninitiated why something as trivial as too much paper could persuade me to abandon a promising Navy career. I'm a US Naval Academy graduate, attended graduate school, followed by the nuclear pipeline. I served my JO tour aboard a fast-attack submarine. During my post-JO shore tour, I've had time to think about my experiences on the boat and speak with many other officers. I've come to a conclusion about the fast-attack submarine community: Archaic and inefficient administrative processes are bringing it down.

Administrative burden hurts personnel, particularly supervisory personnel. It undermines tactical readiness and quality of life. Supervisory personnel spend an inordinate amount of time dealing with daily administrative tasks. In addition to processing basic paperwork, supervisors are required to spend too many hours overseeing simple maintenance and repair evolutions. more

Welcome to "What's Happening on the Hill," an insider's guide to things you care about in the legislative branch.

As members of the US military, we owe it to ourselves to be familiar with the legislative process because it impacts everything we will ever do while wearing the uniform and in retirement. Before we get into the nuts and bolts of the legislative process, a little history on the role of Congress in national security.

Article (1), Section 8 of the Constitution delegates to the legislative branch certain powers that conflict with the Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief's position on how national security policy is derived and implemented. more

Groupie

Summer, 2007

I may not be the right guy for the job. That remains to be seen. History will tell. Or not. Probably not, since like most people, my life will be of little to no historical significance. However, to say that I love this job is an understatement.

The setup: I am a Battalion Surgeon for the 1st Marine Division based in Camp Pendleton, California. After graduating medical school, I completed a one-year internship in internal medicine at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. During that year, I spent many hours on many occasions on a phone, talking, pleading, begging and selling my soul to the detailer for a billet with the Marine Corps Infantry. You'd think that one wouldn't have to beg for an infantry billet which guarantees a trip to a far-off desert where people with a different point of view would appreciate your death and try to ruin your day with a roadside bomb. After much pestering, he cut me orders to the battalion. more
